journalism!

I am extremely interested in majoring in journalism .. right now i'm looking at more magazine journliasm but wouldn't mind writing for a newspaper either. Schools on the east side of the country are where i would really like to go but as an out of state student i could use some help! what are some good schools that aren't really too $$ .. and if they are have good FA packages?

comments would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

kha0123 - I have a D that is just finishing her freshman year in hs that is also interested in magazine journalism. She is going to do an internship this summer with a friend of our family’s that is the editor of several online magazines. My D does not want to go to a school in the east, but would like to stay here in SoCal for college.

If you are looking for schools with good financial aid, then you need to look at specific websites for those colleges and see if the provide need based aid (based on how much your parents make) or if they also provide merit aid based on you grades in hs and scores on SAT/ACTs.

I would be carefull before spending a bunch of money on a journalism major. Have you read about all the papers going down right now? There are a lot of experienced journalists that cannot find work right now. I’m not trying to say it can’t be done, because it can, just consider your options. I would think about English. Journalism majors can do other things to like advertising, or public relations. Sorry, kind of ranting, just give it some thought.

Missouri and Kansas are two of the top j-schools in the country. University of Maryland is good on the East Coast. I know Kansas has magazine journalism, but you probably know that too.

Meredith Publishing (big publisher) is in Des Moines and if you are really interested in magazines, you might call them and ask what colleges they recruit from or what they look for in recruits. Also, Washington, D.C. is a center for associations, which all have–guess what?–magazines, so U. Maryland and D.C. schools may be an option as well.

Journalism is a GREAT major, and I am not the least bit biased. Journalism will teach you to write, which is a skill that is widely desired by all kinds of employers.
