JR here at Marist any questions?

Feel free to ask everyone!

How strict is the administration about downloading music? Torrents?

Compared to the classes you took at high school (CP, AP, honors…etc), how tough are the classes at Marist?

Thanks!

Hey guys, thanks for asking. Well Soviet, Marist is actually pretty strict with illegal downloading…I would know I’ve been nabbed twice for doing it! Remember it’s a very high tech institution, so they have the technology to find people doing such things. It is possible to get away with, but they do crack down on quite a bit as well. As for Eileendover, I would say that the classes are harder in terms of taking it to the next leve. In high school, you regurgitate factual information and memorize a lot of crap, but in college you apply those facts to other things, comparing and contrasting a lot and doing research on a topic while supporting or not supporting it. You also have to focus more on overall themes and connections among events in history rather than just knowing facts. It’s a bit tougher than HS classes, but honestly we have great discussions, and the work is certainly doable. Much of the difficulty of each class depends on the professor and how strict their reputation is. Either way, you learn a lot trust me!

What’s your major RedFox11?

I’m a Psychology major.

Red Fox11 - thanks.

S2 is interested in Political Science / Government and wants to know about internship opportunities.

RedFox, do you know what field you would like to go into? My son was also a Psych major and is applying to grad school now…the time flies!
My twins applied to Marist and one is interested in business/English and the other Science. At our orientation, they seemed to go on a lot about internships for other majors, but Science wasn’t one of them. Do you know anyone that majored in science areas and got internships, etc.
Thanks!

Was wondering what the social life at Marist is like. It has a reputation as a bar school but I’d like your opinion on that. Also is there stuff for someone who doesn’t really like to drink to do there? Thanks.

I met a marist alumni at my gym and he immediately referred to the school as a bar school. I am also wondering what activities you can do beside drinking. Also, how many hours do you go to class a day, and would your schedule be considered busy?

I have a son who attends Marist. I’m pretty sure the alumni referred to Marist as a bar school because most of the drinking does not occur on campus. Kids who want to drink go out to the bars to do so. The freshman dorms are very strict with their no alcohol policy.

They have a lot of clubs on campus. Actually, they encourage participation in the campus community by rewarding students who participate with Priority Points. The more Priority Points a student earns, the easier it is for the student to get their 1st choice housing for the following year.

Re: How many hours do you spend in class each day? The answer depends on the schedule that the student sets up. Full-time students must take 12 credits per semester. I recommend that you take 15 credits per semester if you plan on finishing in 4 years.
Most classes are worth 3 credits each with the exception of lab sciences which are worth 4 credits.

Soviet: I recommend that you explore the Marist website.

My daughter asked about sub-free dorms and they said No, but they have an Eco-friendly one. Do you know of any that are quiet or less rowdy or are they all pretty much the same?
They are going to “shadow” one day when we can figure out a good time.

Marist is most definitely a bar school, but there are also a good deal of on campus parties as well as frat parties or sports house parties. Usually, everyone just goes to pregame at one of these locations, then goes to a bar afterward. If you don’t drink, then you will have a hard time finding things to do, but that’s not just Marist, that’s anywhere.

Debruns: Don’t worry about the noise…honestly the RA’s do a pretty good job making rounds and making sure people are quiet. It’s not like some free for all.

As for the social life here, it’s a huge bar school, but we are pretty small at around 5000 people. Our community is pretty tight knit. We may not be Ohio State, but our fans are very loyal especially to our basketball teams. Honestly in my time here I’ve also witnessed the added diversity in our population. The school is clearly trying HARD to bring in minority students after getting a reputation as an all white school for rich kids. Everyone has fun…if it snows people are out sledding, when it’s nice out people go hang out by the river and lay blankets out or throw a football/baseball around. We jokingly call it Marist Resort because it almost feels like you’re on vacation when it’s nice out.

Debruns, I’m not too sure about Science, but I’ve never heard anyone having problems getting internships here. I’m a Psych major and I’m trying to get an internship with the NYPD for Forensic Psych.

Soviet, that depends. If you transfer in credits, you can take less hours eventually and have a smaller course load. If you’re like me and didn’t, then typically you will have say 3 classes one day, 2 on another, 2 on another 1 on another and 3 on the last. For me right now it’s 1, 1, 2, 2, 3 (mon-fri). Classes are much better than in HS, because you aren’t at school ALL day…3 classes in one day is considered a lot and 4 is almost unheard of. Hope that helps!

Redfox, good luck with that, a very interesting field. My H took a course with the FBI and brought home a book about that field (they gave some out free)

I feel bad for my D’s, re the drinking. I hope that’s not entirely true and they find out more things on their next visit.
My son didn’t drink most years in college and was able to find things to do, but avoiding heavy frat colleges, etc. figuring that would dominate the weekends. I guess it depends on what friends you make, but does the college have activities, movies, trips, etc on the weekends or is that part of student activities not as active.
I ask in part because a few students told my daughters they didn’t drink at UConn and because of it’s size, always found things to do,but one of their siblings went to a small LAC that had a heavy drinking presence and very little to do, it was like the college didn’t bother since most students didn’t partake in them. I hope Marist isn’t like that.

Though almost everyone drinks at most colleges, there’s still things to do at Marist. There are tons of broadway show trips, buses to the mall right from campus for like 2 bucks, comedians and music artists come here a lot, and we land pretty big names for our spring concerts. Lots of younger students are in groups too in order to get priority points. It basically forces you to participate unless you live off campus. Many people also go to the basketball and football games here. Tailgates are always fun and you meet lots of people. Hope that helps!

Red Fox what’s the student body like at Marist? Is it really all rich preppy kids? thanks
