Actually 760 or better gets you out of 1 semester of writing. A 5 on the AP English is supposed to exempt you from both terms. [Tufts University: English Department](<a href=“Home | Department of English”>Home | Department of English) It’s possible that with only 5 AP credits being granted your son isn’t able to count English, or it’s possible that English was recommended because some Med schools want to see it. He might also take it for gen ed requirements. I think it’s a good idea to learn what’s expected writing-wise at the university you are at.

Back when I was at Harvard, they had higher level expository writing classes if you had done well on the AP, but you couldn’t get out of the requirement.

He got 790 on SAT writing, 5 on AP Lang, so he was waived from 2 semester writing courses. He just emailed me that he is taking creative writing, counts towards ART. Did not ask if the course is offered by English dept or Art dept, or recommended by the adviser. He told me he likes writing, so he wanted to take it.

It doesn’t have to be in the Art department to count as Art. There are classes across the board that count as art. My son took a film and music class to fulfill art requirement. If he likes writing then he’s taking the right course. Have your son inquire at Tufts who the pre-med advisor is. I don’t remember it, but all the pre-med kids know who it is and will point him in the right direction. She’s pretty booked up so have your son set up an appointment with her before the registration for next semester ahead of time.

Good point! I will tell him today. You know, it’s hard to get hold of him. Do not answer the phone. I don’t know if he reads my emails. When he emails back, it’s a surprise to me. Poor mom!

I would like to share the experience with Hyatt Place at Medford. It might help other parents who will go for the Oct Tufts Parents and Family Weekend.

The hotel is wonderful. They allowed us checked in a room at 7:00AM in the morning after a red eye flight without extra charge. They provide delicious free breakfast - hot breakfast sandwich with egg and bacon and all other kinds.

The best part is they have free shuttle to go ANYWHERE in a reasonable distance. We took the shuttle to Davis Square, Tufts, Wellington Plaza in Everett to shopping at Target. After we were done, we just called them and waited. They would come to pick us up. The longest waiting for us was 45 minutes. The driver said you can take the shuttle to the restaurant, we did not do that though. We saw over 20 Tufts families in the hotel. Many families were using this free shuttle service.

On the moving day, we wanted to go to Tufts before 7:30am which is the shuttle starting service time, so we took a taxi to Tufts. $10.0+tips.

Texting is the way to go. He might be too busy to answer the phone, but they can always text.

Creative writing is one of the most popular courses at Tufts. It is offered through the English Dept., which is strong.

People who like to write take it because they want to, not because it fulfills a particular requirement per se.

Learning can be fun…

Do you think it’s better that he comes home in the first Thanksgiving holiday? It seems school is off Wed-Fri. So he can take Tue night flight and back on Sat.

I don’t know if the campus is too quite by that time? If there are many students around, then it’s Ok that he stays. Otherwise he will be too lonely.

I did not fly my daughter home to San Diego last year- her first. I told her to make friends fast and go home with someone back there for Thanksgiving! Lots of New England kids love to bring home the out -of -staters. She had a great time!

The campus does tend to clear out over Thanksgiving and speaking as a “New England Family” we do love to host out of state friends on any holiday - as long as we are in town :-)

Check out the price of airline tickets–that might make you decide that your son should find an east coast friend who’ll host him for Thanksgiving. If you decide to fly him home, be sure to check class schedules to make sure he can fly on Tuesday night. I’m not sure if dorms will be open on Saturday–we’ve always had our kid fly back on Sunday.

The dorm will be closed during Thanksgiving??

I thought if he is not coming back and cannot find a host, just stay at dorm.

What about those international students? School cannot expect everyone find a host family. And they cannot check in the hotel. This is not right!

One my colleague’s D2 is in John Hopkins. She complained that the school shut down during the Thanksgiving. Her D1 was in Princeton last year, never has this problem. So D2 went to Princeton for Thanksgiving.

just checked…dorms are open. Dining services hours–not sure, should be posted at some point or you could call them. I’d expect hours and locations to be limited that weekend.

I guess Tufts is more like Princeton than Johns Hopkins in that the dorms are open on Thanksgiving and other holidays but they are closed over winter break

Here are the dining hall hours

[Medford/Somerville Thanksgiving Break Hours - Tufts Dining Services](http://dining.tufts.edu/medford-somerville-thanksgiving-break-hours/)

Thanks! what a relief!!

Is his roommate local? Last year my son had a roommate from west coast and we invited him over for thanksgiving.

Yes. half hr drive from Tufts. I just want to plan ahead and know the options. Thanksgiving is down the road, I don’t think his roommate would ask him now. They get along very well. A nice kid! His roommate brought everything - refreg, microwave, printer, broom, dusting pan …
They are taking some courses together.

There’s usually a Thanksgiving dinner planned for the folks remaining on campus–around 20 or so people attend. Because there is only one full week of class in between Thanksgiving and Reading Period this year (usually there are two), I don’t know whether it might make more sense to do Thanksgiving apart (financially speaking, party).

Usually when do you know the final exam dates?

Since Tufts is implementing new isis system. Now I cannot have access to my son’s class schedule and grade system except BILLING. He tried to give me access in Mid of July. Has not tried it since. I don’t know if other freshman’s parents can access.

I will try this weekend.
