<p>I really think the answer to the deprecation of money question was the soldier one. I said this before, but I'm pretty sure speculators took advantage of the depreciation in money value. They bought a ton of bonds from impoverished families and then later redeemed them for much more money.</p>
<p>On the other hand, if the soldiers were getting paid money that wasn't worth much, they couldn't afford a lot of things, including basic necessities. My textbook (for some reason, I remember a lot of details from my book) talked about how the reason why soldiers suffered at Valley Forge that winter was because local merchants were much more willing to deal with British soldiers whose money was more sound.</p>
