"Islam reached sub-Saharan Africa in the earliest days of the religion and spread slowly over the following centuries. Although occasionally brought by the sword, expansion was largely a peaceful affair facilitated by trade routes linking the region to the Arab world. The process can generally be understood as one of gradual diffusion, which had the effect of overlaying Islam on – rather than wholly eliminating local belief systems. As a result, the Islam that developed in Africa was characterized by diverse practices, and rigid understandings of the Quran and the Sunnah were eschewed in favor of less doctrinal observances that focused on the believer’s personal relationship with Allah – evidenced by the widespread popularity of the tariqa (Sufi brotherhoods)."

Let's see... Islam started around 600 CE, so let's say it go to SS Africa in 700 CE. When it came, people got it but did not prefer it over local religion.

SO WHAT'S THE ANSWER?!?!?

the question asked "before colonial times" right?

Wait didnt the African religion question ask prior to 1500?

can anyone confirm?
not like it really matters lol

100th post!! w00t!!

Vanilla: What said "before Colonial times"?

The official numbers so Brazil had a population of 37% slaves by emancipation. In America is was... 11%? (Not sure on the figure, it's from a breakdown statistic by state)

the sub-saHARAN religion question

Prior to 1500... does it matter? SS Africa is STILL mostly animist-Islam fusion.

Yeah, I found in my book it said the population of slaves in Latin America was higher than North America. All we need to do is figure out if the people in North America were claimed LEGALLY as second-rate citizens. (Don't care about what actually happened, we just need to find out if they were supposed to get the same rights)

Vanilla: Someone said "before 1500". Oh whatever, it's a trap question. I hit local religions because it was a safer answer. SS Africa was not known to be totally Islam.

anybody interested w/ making a compilation of ALL the questions?

i think we can get about 50-60?

No I wasn't saying youre answer was wrong Taishaku, because I put the same answer you did. In Kaplan it says that Sub-Saharans started converting to Islam in the 1700s, not 1500s, and even then they maintained their tribal beliefs or mixed them into Islam.
