June 2010: Chemistry

500th post! yeeeeeeeea lol
well even though it said “physical properties”, Mendeleev predicted the density of Ga, so that was T T CE right?
and arghh. i made that mistake too with the question of 14.7, i put 1.47 because i thought .5 *.2 = .01 as well
urgh. so far so good tho, only 2 wrong, 0 omitted

Yeaaah. :\ I had the same issue about N2 and CO2, but I just put CO2 in the end.

noooooo fail 501. =_= so close!!

And I am absolutely positive that part II of the Mendeleev question stated same total electrons. So it was T/F. I read that question at least three times to make sure I wasn’t misreading, haha.

What did you guys get for the ionic radius problem? I blanked out on the trends, so I had to kind of reason my way through the problem. I recall putting something like Mg2+. Was that a choice?

for the question about the h2o produced, was that 11.2 L? i didn’t think so because it said at stp, and h2o is liquid at stp right…?

for N2 I think the main problem is that there wasn’t a proper angle - if you think about math classes, they always ask for an angle as “angle A B C”, and you look at B to find your angle.
However for N2, you only have two atoms, so there’s no angle being formed.

@ Anrajg ; Yeah, I thinnnk that’s what I put.

@ Chingstah ; I don’t think I marked that because of what you said about liquid @ STP. :]

i think mg +2 was right
more protons in the nucleus pulls in the electrons more?

Yeah 10 char

oh ok haha i kept reading people saying it was 11.2 so i was getting worried xD

Mg 2+ because less electrons with more protons create a greater pull due to the nucleus’ attraction to the electrons, making the ionic radius smaller.

Will someone repeat the 14.7 question?

no its was BECAUSE it has the same number of ELECTRONS as aluminum and therefore its FALSE

We know now ihs

Solid on the ionic radius trend. I guess my reasoning worked. I’m pretty sad about the Mendeleev question though. This is my first time taking a subject test. Do you guys think they will curve questions like that or are “trick” questions (I know they aren’t necessarily trick questions, but I don’t seem to be the only one who read it too quickly) to be expected on tests like these?

I don’t know what the raw scoring is. On Sparknotes and Barron and McGraw, it says like skip 6 or 7 and it’s still and 800 but some people are saying it’s miss 2 and it turns into a 790 so… I’m confused.

so what was the answer?

that’s what I thought…
but i don’t know what i put for the devation question.

Mendeleev - T, F?

I remember seeing the word “valence” in the question, but the overwhelming consensus is that it is T, F. I’m not sure what it actually was.
