***June 2014 SAT (US ONLY)***

“Superorganism”, the term that the Ethiopian immigrant likened the traffic/people to, implies that there is some sort of collective action. I’m fairly certain that the answer choice with “functioning as a group/unit” was correct.

what about #16 for the passage? what was his emotion upon entering NYC, I said confused, but I felt like it could have been awe as well. …

hope i got a 2300+ 2nd time taking

@theanaconda I put awed for that one. From what I could infer, he was intrigued and fascinated by the novel sights and sounds that he was experiencing. I think he was certainly left in awe by the new atmosphere, but I do not believe he was necessarily confused by what he was seeing.
@RishabC297 I’m with you on that one

@theanaconda I still don’t see any evidence of him being “confused”. It’s not like he was roaming around or anything, not knowing what was going on. The thing about him losing his hearing was just to emphasize what I would say is his surprise (aka awe) at the relative silence of the cars.

@capitalamerica I guess so, I struggled with that one so you’re probably correct. I’m awful at mood/tone questions. what did you say for #20 on that one? Asking what the sound is, I said it was a by-product of being a newcomer, but am not sure for that one as well. I guess this passage as a whole tripped me up.

@theanaconda I said that as well. I think when I was on that question, none of the other answers really made any sense. :/

I just realized that my essay prompt was “Is it more important to tell the truth or to not hurt someone’s feelings?” And my essay revolved around how constructive criticism is necessary in order for a person to show their true potential.
Would this essay get a 0 because I didn’t directly say that it is important to tell the truth, but rather I said criticism is important (isn’t it implied that the truth is being told)?
IM SO SCARED

@LOLBeast1 unless the graders are braindead, I’d almost guarantee you wontXD.

It might have helped (a little bit, probably) if you answered the question directly.

@theanaconda I said “by product of newcomer” as well… the other similar choice was “new sounds of customs (???)” since the word “customs” didnt make sense to me.

Customs:1) a practice so long established that it has the force of law.
2) Sociology . a group pattern of habitual activity usually transmitted from one generation to another.

[just kidding. hao2delete posts]

9 people on the Google doc said “New customs”… now I’m confused. Can you explain why you got “by product of a newcomer”? By product means “Something produced in the making of something else.” If NYC works as a superorganism that’s likely to be unaltered by the arrival of one foreigner, what is the thing being produced in the making of something else? I realize the character is a dynamic character, but what is the “making” that is changing him/forming something else? (if that was your reasoning behind the question?) (refer back to the definition) Thanks! @capitalamerica @theanaconda @jarjarbinks23

Also, the definition of “customs” I thought of is “A traditional and widely accepted way of behaving or doing something that is specific to a particular society, place, or time.”… I’m confused. Why is that wrong? I’m not the best at CR, and I just need some help so I can do better next time. Thanks.

@LOLBeast1‌ I read a 12 essay that somebody posted that completely intimated their answer and didn’t directly state their opinion. so I’m sure your essay is relevant haha

I thought the “sound” the ethiopian guy heard was a “product” of his status in New york as a new comer. Because since he is new, he is one of the few people in New York who is hearing this sound … nobody who has lived in NY for a long time is going to hear what the ethiopian guy is hearing.

@wchristen89

Did anyone else have the CR section about the man in the diner?

What did you guys get for the reading question:
“slip” most nearly means?
I put “pass” but obviously im not confident

I put elude but that is probably wrong.
