i despise ACT science. Any tips on how to go faster besides reading questions first?
Back to @0br0123 question, I didn’t understand questions 35-40 from the Science section either from the April ACT. Can anyone please explain? :-/
@DB1998 is the April test online?
@duhlife I would suggest using the “finger pointing” strategy, in which for example if the question is related to Figure 1, put your index finger immediately on figure 1. It helps you to not get the graphs and tables mixed up during the exam and keeps you more focused.
And although people say to read the passage for the conflicting viewpoints first before answering questions, I find it easier to go straight to the questions and read whatever portion briefly the question asks about. It saves a lot of time for me personally, but everyone’s different!
Lastly, if you find a passage that makes absolutely no sense to you, or a topic which you’re absolutely not familiar with, don’t go straight to the questions. The Science section is made so that its fair to everyone, so if you probably just take 45 seconds to get an overview of the concept, youll be able to understand/answer the questions more quickly.
That’s all I can think of for now! Good luck on the exam!
what new changes to the writing test are people talking about?
@supertutor I appreciate your tips! Thanks
@duhlife I’m not sure. I ordered it through ACT
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to finish the reading section faster? I do better if I have at least 5 minutes to check my answers but sometimes I barely have any time left.
Is there anyway to post pictures to this thread? I’m a fairly new member, so I don’t know all of CC’s features.

Standardized tests in general are starting to make me nauseous . . . D:
Anyways, taking the act tomorrow… Don’t feel ready. . . Any tips for sustaining focus in the math?
I hate how you get less time per question on the act. Also, what are the merits of taking the writing/essay portion of the act. Are there any? Does it impact your score like the sat?
@NotAMathlete hey i have no math tips except like putting programs in your calc to make you go faster (slope, midpoint etc). you only take the writing portion if the college you want to apply to requires it. It is safer to just take writing if you’re not sure which colleges require writing and which do not. It does NOT affect your composite score; however, the act gives you a separate combined English and writing score. So if you do not so great on the essay, your combined english and writing score will be lower than your english score w/o writing.
Did you guys say there would be a double set of questions for one science passage or something like that? I remember there was a discussion on something that was recently different about the science part.
Do you guy know if there is going to be dual (double) passage for reading?
I would be prepared for a dual reading passage- probably passage 3? I actually like those because you know where to to find the questions. Also, this may be a test with no 5 question passages, but just 6 and 7 question passages.
There have been double passages on past tests @jdjmoon
Not only have there been double passages on past tests, but I can assure you that there will be one on tomorrow’s test.
Additionally, the science section has changed to 6 passages in total with there being only 6 and 7 question passages, so throw out all your old easy 5 question passage strategies and don’t waste time verifying this during the test like I did last time.
Is the dual passage always humanities?
Has anyone ever taken a practice tests the day before, did poorly, but managed to get 30+ on the actually test ?
Hi, does anyone know how the practice tests from the act PDFs compare to the real exam… I think someone said that the ones in the red book are easier
