@apexamcramming What exactly do you think is making you perform badly? Are you rushing through it or are you having a hard time understanding the questions?
im only studying for english and reading. I truly think i can get a 34+ in each ( I got a 34E last time and a 30R my first time) but i’m not studying for science and will do very little for math.
If anyone wants to do well on English, here’s my advice (my E score went up 6 point in a month):
Use the Red Book and take the English sections alone
go over you answers and understand why you got them wrong
and most importantly, RETAKE the entire section you already did (timed and everything)
keep retaking until you get a perfect score
THIS METHOD WORKS MAGIC, I PROMISE
@0br0123 I got a 35 in English on the April Test. I can confirm that your method is effective. I studied in a similar manner.
better suggestion…dont take ACT and apply to a school that doesn’t require it

Any tips for the reading section?
For reading, read as fast as possible and just get right answers. It’s hard to give specific tips for reading.
Reading is an area that you either get or don’t. The biggest help with that is just practicing… practice, practice, practice.
@0br0123
Thank you so much for your advice on the English section. I got a 31 in April but I was aiming for a 34ish. Here’s my question, you know there are a bunch of questions where they ask you which one fits the best in the settings? I ALWAYS miss those. I feel like those are all kinda like opinion questions. And I’m having a really hard time improving them. Do you have any tips for those?
Thank you so much!
@tina23 I scored a 34 on the English section in Feb. Like you, I had trouble with those questions when I was taking the practice tests but I started doing the following things:
- Reading the whole sentence - make sure that you read the entire sentence. It is important, of course.
- Make sure you pay attention to context - if it doesn’t make sense, don’t do it.
- Avoid redundancy - always make sure that your choice isn’t redundant.
The shortest answer is very often correct on the English section.
If anyone has completed the Navajo section in the English could you explain to me why the answer to 16 is NO CHANGE and not C (“group was”)?
@HeyItsNick I can never answer all of the questions in time. On top of that, I begin to freak out when time begins to run out, which causes me to get a bunch wrong.
@RoadtotheIvies98 it’s because “group” is a singular word, not a plural.
I made a thread with a bunch of practice tests, it’s been deleted
What’s the best prep book for the reading section? I usually score 26-30, but I really want to consistently score above 30.
Prep books don’t really help that much in the reading section.
I’m a horrible test taker, I find it extremely hard to concentrate without complete silence. I took the PLAN test in tenth grade and got so distracted I literally started drawing patterns with the bubbles. I got like a 15-17. I took my first ACT in April and then shortly took another one required by my state. On my first one, I got a 21 (21R 21E 18M 23S) I am horrible at math but also there was a lot of trigonometry on it which I haven’t taken yet. I went in blind for that test just to see where I’d fall with my score. All the schools I want to go to require at least a 26-28 and I am free for the summer so I’m gonna buy books and possibly get a tutor. I can study the entire summer and take the Sept test do you think if I really put a lot of work into it I have a chance to improve that much?
PSA: I made a thread a couple days ago with a bunch of practice tests and the mods deleted it. Let me know if you need the practice tests.
