The German choreographer Pina Bausch (created) dances (that incorporated) everyday human gestures (and alternating) between highly stylized, precise movements and (more flowing), expressive ones.

Does anyone agree that this question could actually have two answers?

The official answer is C - and alternating. We'd want to switch it to "alternated" to be parallel with "incorporated."

The choreographer created dances that incorporated gestures and alternated between stylized and expressive movements.

However, couldn't we also make the same argument for B? Change it to "incorporating" to make it parallel with alternating?

The choreographer created dances incorporating gestures and alternating between stylized and expressive movements.

Thoughts?

Don’t try to reason with CB. Just do your best to predict which “right,” answer they will consider as truly correct. Lots of ambiguity in this one but I think that if you practice enough you’ll get a feel for which one they are going to want.

I think its because of the word created which goes with incorporated. The ed at the end makes it parallel.

it can’t be incorporating. That would put the sentence in the present progressive, while it should be in the past, because of the word “created”

you could use incorporating if it was: …creates dances incorporating everyday human gestures and alternating between highly…

Just wanted to back up satman who is 100% correct. You are right that it could be alternating and incorporating, but that would put the sentence in present progressive as satman said. You need to remember on these that only one thing can be incorrect, and if you think it is incorrect, it should be easily fixable 95% of the time (arbitrarily). To have the whole sentence be parallel and in the same tense you only have one choice for an answer to fix, and that is alternating->alternated. You can’t fix both created and incorporated, so the answer is alternating. This is key to success on the writing! Again you can only fix one thing, and that one thing should be easily fixable. Hope this helps!

Good points all, thank you!
