Junior chance thread. Mainly LAC's and SUNY's.

Hi everyone, I'm a junior looking for LACs and smaller universities. I know this isn't the college search section, but I'd appreciate it if you could also suggest any other colleges you think I'd also like. Basically looking for a small to medium size school (7K max undergrads) within a 10 hour radius of upstate NY, liberal or balanced political climate, no more than 25% greek - no greek life is a plus (don't plan on going greek, and would prefer any greek scene to be inclusive and non-elitist). I do not want a suitcase scool. I also need great need-based FA. Looking to study Political Science with a minor in something like philosophy or religion (or Trinity's human right's program). Pretty campuses are a major +.

Now for chances:

White Male -Upstate NY – Small public school (about 93 in class) at least on par with schools in the area, maybe above.

I’ve taken the hardest course load possible my 4 years. Freshman and sophomore year I took the honor course available each year and all the core distribution courses with electives.

Total Honors courses: 3. Total ACE courses (our school’s college level courses): 6.

Junior Year: Pre-Calc, Chemistry, Environmental, Honors English, ACE U.S., ACE Spanish, Band, Choir.
Senior Year: ACE Statistics, Physics, ACE English, ACE Government/Economics, ACE Spanish, Human Rights, Media and Journalism, Band, Choir
GPA:
Fresh/Sophomore year about a 3.7, almost all individual grades were A’s/A-‘s with 1 or 2 B+’s in there.
Junior year about a 3.6, the year started shaky with my GPA at about a 3.5 but I’ve really learned from the beginning of the year (was taken aback by the larger challenge) and my GPA will be a 3.6 by the end of the year. My grades will range from one or two B’s to A’s, with many B+ and A-‘s. Basically, I have a decent GPA but my grades aren’t perfect.

Senior Year: I know I haven’t gotten there yet, and there is no way to tell, but I really think I will be prepared for the challenge, and I hope to end up with a 3.7 with all A’s/A-‘s, but possibly a B+.

Class Rank: (Have actually gone up this year, many others grades dropped a bit) About 15/93 at the moment. I would be about rank 2 or 3 in both the senior and sophomore class (my class is very competitive).

SATs: I plan to retake at least two times next year. I didn’t do a ton of preparation, did about 5 days of studying. Would like to get each section up about 80 points.
CR: 620 – Writing: 570 – Math: 540.

College list:
University of Rochester (Visiting in fall)
Trinity College (Visited - fell in love)
Connecticut College (Visited - really really liked it, somehow not as much as Trin)
Skidmore College (Visiting in fall)
SUNY Binghamton (Visiting in fall. Financial safety)
Allegheny College (Visiting in fall)
Lake Forest College
Either SUNY Buffalo/New Paltz - Maybe both (Financial and Admission safety)
Warren Wilson College (Visited. Quality of life seems amazing but I worry about the academics)

I think you’re good to go for Skidmore, from what I’ve heard.

The campus around skidmore is pretty good, although when I was in the science building, the rooms could use some upgrades.

University of Rochester - You’re gonna need at least a 2000 on the SAT to be somewhat competitive.
Trinity College - ???
Connecticut College - At least a 1900
Skidmore College - At least a 2000
SUNY Binghamton - At least a 1900
Allegheny College - ???
Lake Forest College - ???
Either SUNY Buffalo/New Paltz - At least an 1900
Warren Wilson College - ???

Look into Bard. It’s pretty similar to New Paltz and Skidmore AND is test optional.

Thanks. I heard Bard is really quirky though, maybe a little bit too much. Also, how is the FA? Could I get more chances on my current schools? I’ll chance back, just link.

I suppose my last bump if no one wants to chance me:(. I’ll chance back tomorrow if you post link.

University of Rochester - Big reach.
Trinity College - Not familiar enough
Connecticut College - Medium Reach
Skidmore College - Reach
SUNY Binghamton - High Match
Allegheny College - no idea
Lake Forest College- high match
Either SUNY Buffalo/New Paltz - match @ buffalo, New Paltz = high match
Warren Wilson College- no idea

Sorry, I’m not from NY so I’m not the greatest with the SUNYs. Consider some of the CUNYs as well. Perhaps CUNY Brooklyn, CUNY Baruch, or CUNY Hunter. I would say those are matches.

U of R : reach for you right now due to SAT ( have not seen your ECs yet)
Trinity College: reach due to SAT
Conn Coll: high match
Skidmore: high match
SUNY Binghamton: match
Allegheny: low match
Lake Forest: high match
SUNY Buffalo/New Paltz: match

Basically you are in the range of SUNY but you need to lift up or SAT to at least 2000 for U o R, Trinity, Conn Coll, Skidmore. Also, I am not sure about your ECs. ECs are important too. Remember to write good essay, you should be fine.

Good luck !!!

Yeah I just realized I forgot my ECs. They may seem possibly concentrated in government?

University of Rochester (Visiting in fall)- reach
Trinity College (Visited - fell in love)- match
Connecticut College (Visited - really really liked it, somehow not as much as Trin)- match
Skidmore College (Visiting in fall)- match
SUNY Binghamton (Visiting in fall. Financial safety)- in
Allegheny College (Visiting in fall)- I would say in
Lake Forest College- ???
Either SUNY Buffalo/New Paltz - in
Warren Wilson College- in

overall you are a great candidate, and your ECs have a skew toward a government/political area. I would also say apply to Hamilton College.

I would recommend Hobart & William Smith, particularly if you’re looking for a LAC with a nice campus. You’ll need to get your SATs up to consider Bing a safety.

University of Rochester: Reach
Trinity College: Don’t Know
Connecticut College : Reach
Skidmore College: Low reach. If you raise up SAT score it is very possible
SUNY Binghamton : High Match. Being instate should put you in.
Allegheny College: Low Match
Lake Forest College: Don’t Know
Either SUNY Buffalo/New Paltz: Low Match
Warren Wilson College : Saftey

How will you retake your SAT 3 more times?

Thanks. Yeah I don’t consider Bing a safety admissions wise yet, but I know I can afford it if I gain admission. I do plan on majorly upping those SAT scores, I am going to study all August. I heard H&WS and Hamilton are really greek oriented, but really don’t know myself.

I believe I’m going to take it two more times, in October and November. Will I be able to use the November scores in admissions?
