Junior really interested in bs(ba)/md progs

Hi,

I am a Junior and Im really interested in the combined degree med progs. I was wondering if you guys could help me decide which progs i have a decent cahnce of getting into and also if you guys could give me some advice about the admissions process, etc.

My GPA is really killing me and I know its not really competitive. I think i can get it to about a 3.71. I was also wondering if I could just submit my weighted GPA instead of my unweighted because its a bit better as i have taken mainly honors, magnet and ap courses. I don;t want to waste my time applying to places I have no chance for and your advice will really help me prepare for my apps. Thanks in advance!

I would go for at least a 2200 SAT or preferably a 2300. There’s not much you can do about the GPA now, but the rest of your app seems pretty strong.

Good, focused EC’s and solid test scores/grades. I think you have a shot at most of the programs, assuming you can convey your passion for medicine in your interview.

To answer your gpa question, you will need both the UW and most likely the W GPA’s. Luckily, most programs will look at every speck on your application, which should help you out because your EC’s are so strong.

Have you thought about SAT subject tests? You should take math 2, bio, and chem or physics. Many combined degree programs require subject tests.

your GPA, ACT and SAT are too low. too many ECs don’t make you to BS/MD. Need high GPA and SAT first. SAT - 2300, GPA - unweighted - 3.9. Esp, you are an asian boy.

alwaysleah - whoops i forgot to include those scores:
SAT Bio = 780
Math 1 = 800
Math 2 = 790
Chem = Taking this comming test date (I don’t feel really strong in chem i may get in the low 700s)

Thanks for the replies,
and BigFire yeah thats why im nervous. I think my act score will be pretty good (it comes out in a coup weeks). If its not really high ill take the sat again. Ive been improving ~ 100 every time so who knows :). Also I was hoping progs like renselear/albany med will look past the gpa and etc bc i heard they are a research oriented program.
