Junior Schedule

Currently I have [rotating a/b block schedule]:

A
1. English seminar
2. AP Economics
3. Latin II
4. AP Statistics

B
1. AP Calc BC
2. AP Chemistry
3. Spanish 4
4. AP US Government

I'm thinking about dropping out of Latin II. I really loathe the teacher and the overall "feel" of the class. It'll allow me to take AP English Language in that block and I'll have block 1 free on A days.

So I can either:
1. Suck it up and stick with Latin and regular English
2. Take AP English and sleep in on A days [I'm not a morning person].
3. Take AP English and AP US History [which would be a weird class to take because at my new school sophomores have the option of taking AP US instead of regular US while at my old school we were required to take honors US before AP]
4. Take AP English and Physics [which will be required if I want to take AP Physics next year]
5. Take AP English and two art electives [I'm looking into Ceramics, Theater or Piano. I already have two years of band, so my fine arts requirement is not a problem.]

This will be my first year taking AP classes [I've gotten 11 honors classes from 9th and 10th grade] and I'm looking to study business or law. My dream school is Yale.

Thanks!

Options 3 or 4 seem the best to me. Depends on what you like better really, since neither seem to have too much to do with your intended major. APUSH would probably be the easier track.

I suppose AP Physics would look better than regular physics senior year, then?

Would it look badly if I graduated high school without an AP History? The school only offers AP World and American. World is generally considered a weak option and I'm a bit hesitant because American seems like a 10th grade class. One of the turnoffs of Latin for me was that all the students were sophomores and very clique-y and obnoxious.

In answer to the above ^^questions, yes and yes, especially if you are applying to Yale. I would also advise options 3 or 4. Will you be taking AP Spanish next year?

Yes, I'll be taking AP Spanish. I'm not a big science fan, though. I've gone through Honors Physical and Earth, Honors Bio and Honors Chem. Would it be a better idea to dump AP Chem for regular Physics so I can take AP next year while taking AP USH? Or just doubling up on science and not take USH?

I could also consider self-studying US history and taking the SATII... would that be equivalent to taking the AP history class? My concern is overloading my schedule. I started school on Friday and I've already heard many exclamations over the amount of AP classes I'm taking.

Have you taken any AP classes yet? I agree that 5 AP's is a lot for a Junior, but there can be wide variations on how hard the classes are, depending on the teacher. I would advise you drop the Latin, take AP english and regular Physics this year and APUSH, AP Spanish , AP Physics and maybe AP Chem next year, if you want to show that you took a very rigorous courseload, hopefully without killing yourself this year. But first speak to your counselor to find out if he would check" most challenging course load possible" on his recommendation letter for you with your planned classes for this year and next, as that will be something that Yale will want to see. Above all, it is important for you to achieve the highest GPA you are capable of this year, so if you need to scale back the number of AP's to achieve that, then consider doing so strongly. Self studying US History and taking the SAT subject test would not "count" as taking the AP class. But self studying and taking the AP test for APUSH might. But unless you have an unavoidable scheduling conflict, I wouldn't advise self studying over taking the class.

Drop at least 2 of them. You're going to wish you were dead.

So... should I add or should I drop?

AP Chem is considered one of the hardest classes in my school, so I'm certainly not going to be upset if I drop it for Physics, but I was really hoping to get an SATII out of it. I want 3 SATIIs in all, and so far the only thing I'd be able to take is Math II...

Drop Chem and take it next year. You can take the SAT subject test in Spanish at the end of this year, and if you take AP English this year, you can take the SAT test in Language

Spanish? I heard that the SATII had a really awful curve...

I'm also considering the possibility of studying Physics over the summer and jumping into AP Physics C. Or I think there might me a summer school, too.

That might be a good idea, because you will have already taken an advanced enough calculus course to handle the math in C. If you need to have 3 SAT II's then I don't think you have much choice but to take the Spanish test. I think you will be fine taking it in June, having completed Spanish 4. You can always prep for it with a Collegeboard test book, just to be on the safe side. Have you taken the SAT yet? Remember, you can't take the SAT AND any SAT subject tests on the same day. So you have to plan out when you are going to take which tests. Most Juniors take the SAT in April, AP tests in May, and SATII's in June. That way if you want/ need to take the SAT again, you can schedule it for Oct, and any additional subject tests can be taken in Nov.

Take the hardest courseload possible.

Whatever option that is, take full advantage of your opportunties presented to you.

That's the best advice anyone can give you.
