hi y'all, i'm a junior in HS and really, really want to go to college for MT and was wondering what kind of tips you could tell me to help get ready for auditions and such my senior year. in all honesty, im kinda doing most of this on my own, like without my parents, because nether one of them really want me to go into theater (and my dad leaves for southwest asia come may), they want me to do nursing or something like that. did anybody do it by there selfs or would you recomend me ask my parents for some help? im new to the whole thing and am trying to get some things situated befor my dad leaves...

brie, there is tons of information on this site that will answer most if not all of your questions. When most of us first get here we start reading and reading and reading. You can also do searches regarding specific subjects. After you’ve done some reading then you can ask more specific questions. And yes there are students on here that do it for themselves! Good Luck and we’ll be looking forward to helping you out.

I’m just starting this process myself so I can’t give concrete advice, but I reccommend getting your parents on your side. Show them that this your passion, that it’s what you want to do more than anything else. They may not be 100% behind your decision to go into theater but it helps when they’re supportive of you and understand that you’re serious about this.

At this point, my parents support my decision but you probably won’t ever see them as one of the parents on CC. It’s just not their thing. I’ll most likely be the one researching, scheduling auditions, making sure applications are in on time, etc. but it’s good to know my parents will be there when times get stressful (which is inevitable in this process).

I will be the first to say my parents were not supportive of me at all about going into MT. Since I was 10, I wanted to go into athletic training but in my senior year of high school, I realized that I love performing and I wanted to pursue my dream.
My dad especially did not want me to go into the performing arts so I struck a deal with him by pursuing a BA in Theatre so I got more of a well-rounded education in other subjects. However, not even halfway through my first semester of my Freshman year (last year) I realized that I did indeed want a MT program and a more structured one. I sat down with him during Winter Break and really explained that this is what I want to do. However, I will pursue a minor in another discipline.
After much persuasion, my parents are finally supportative of me and I started my Sophomore year in the Fall at a new school where I am a BFA MT major and couldn’t be happier.
So in short, I guess what I am saying that while your parents may not be supportative, hopefully they will come along. Of course it can be difficult doing this by yourself (speaking from experience here) but there is always this message board and people are more than willing to help. I got a lot of help when I was auditioning for new schools in the spring.
Don’t hesititate to ask for help on here and continue to reach out to your parents.
Hope this helps and best wishes!
