We are looking at the Fall housing options and wondered if you would need a car if you lived at the Station at Mill Point. Can a junior even get space there? What are the Oaks like? Are they a good option? Also, my S is thinking about Colonnades, but he's going to be a junior and I think it would be nice to have a kitchen. He's currently in the historic section. Thanks!

My impression is that you would be better taking the shuttle bus or walking to campus from the Station at Mill Point as parking on campus will probably be a hassle. I believe that any juniors who live there are pulled in by rising seniors. The housing email that just went out identified Station at Mill Point and the Oaks as the primary “neighborhoods” for juniors and seniors. That and off campus housing. My son’s friends are looking primarily at the Oaks and off campus as their options.

Son lives at Mill Point without a car. I think he either walks or takes his bike.

Having a car at Mill Point wouldn’t help him get to class, because on weekdays from 9-5 the only place he’d be allowed to park on campus is at Mill Point. My D discovered this when she had a car and lived in Daniely. When you register your car with Elon they assign you a parking area near your dorm. Your parking assignment is visible on your parking pass, so they know if you are parking illegally.

He could park anywhere on campus in the evening and on weekends (which is great for late nights in the library) but not during weekdays. I think you have to live a good distance from campus and away from the shuttle busses to get a pass that lets you park on the main campus during weekdays.

Surprisingly, my D tells me there is no shuttle to Mill Point. The Oaks is more convenient, IMHO, but Mill Point is absolutely gorgeous. I think a rising junior would probably need a senior to “pull them in” to get into Mill Point. I could be wrong though.

Re parking pass - My S lives pretty far down Haggard Ave, but still on the shuttle route. His parking pass is for Colonnades. 3 days/week he met a friend for breakfast at colonnades and then they walked to class together, so this worked fine for him. The other 2 days he drove to campus, but found he could park closer to where he needed to be by parking on a side street. Again, this worked fine for him - but obviously makes no sense if you live at Mill Pt. He does use the parking pass at night for a weekly event in the Mosely Center, and I guess occasionally on the weekend.

My S (a rising junior) is getting ready to sign up for housing and I’m really confused. He is going to try and get into a two bedroom unit (I think they call it a single room suite??) with another kid. He went to res life to ask some questions and he told me they kept stressing that they don’t guarantee housing for juniors and seniors. Are they trying to steer him off campus? Does anyone know how difficult it is for juniors/seniors to find units where they aren’t sharing a bedroom? I’m afraid he’s going to get online and none of his choices will be available. Any information from someone who’s been there done that would be appreciated! Thank you.

I’m not sure if experiences from last year will help you - definitely heard there were problems for rising juniors last year in getting on campus housing. Should be better this year due to the new dorms in the Global Village. I think you have to be flexible and consider off campus options if he can’t get the on campus housing he wants. My son is in Greek housing next year - but the majority of his rising junior friends are looking at the Oaks or off campus.

Thanks Rockvillemom. I guess we will see how it goes and then explore off campus housing, if it comes to that. I hope not. Don’t know where to begin with that.

Take a look at this link for a few ideas. It lists several off campus apartments.
