Junior Statesmen

Hey CCer's...

I'm a sophomore and my counselor told me about Junior Statesman of America). It sounds cool, because law and politics interest me. It sounds really competitive though, so I'm worried. Grades are cool, but it's the leadership that worries me. I am in Debate Club and recently started a Speech and Forensics Team at school, but that's all I got (besides Track). Was anyone at this program from previous years? How was it?

I don't think it is that competitive to get in, as long as you do well in school and can write term papers. I attended the summer school at Georgetown in 1995 (if you love politics, I would go to the Georgetown program), and returned to work there as a counselor in 2002, and speakers program asst director in 2003. I hardly hear anyone who walk away disappointed...I personally think it is awesome, and encourage you to go for it. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I only worked for them for 2 summers, so I am not employed by them anymore, and I am not out to push them. I will answer any questions or concern you have. yuwynn_ho@hotmail.com

I did this program 2 summers ago, before my senior year of HS.

I don't think it's too hard to get in, but it is a lot of work (especially at the 4 schools where you take 2 classes). It's 6 hours of classes a day, plus 2 hours of political / current events debates each night. In the month, you'll probably give 10 presentations and read 5? books.
