Hi everyone! I am a current junior from NYC who is planning on visiting WashU next week! Could any current students give some recommendations for where to eat/visit/etc?
How long will you be in town? Where are you staying? Will you have a car available? What’s your academic interest (i.e. engineering, pre-med, humanities, etc.)?
FWIW, the weather in St. Louis is GORGEOUS this week. I haven’t checked next week’s forecast, but if it’s nice when you’re here, Forest Park is right next to Wustl (I recommend the free zoo, within the park, if the weather is good), and the Missouri Botanical Garden (short easy drive but definitely not walkable from Wustl) should also be very nice.
Aside from the university itself, the main “hangout” area (interesting restaurants, funky stores, etc.) is “The Loop” on Delmar (~4 blocks north of Wustl)
(FWIW, I’m not a student - rather a St. Louis parent of one recent Wustl grad and one HSer headed to Wustl this coming August.)
Eat at Salt + Smoke
Agreed - if you like BBQ, Salt n Smoke (on Delmar, in the Loop) gets a big thumbs up from me.
The Loop is where many students go for off campus meals as so close and walkable from campus. If you have a car you can go to the central west end or the Hill for other nice meals. Forrest Park also has a great free Art Museum and planetarium.
On campus, if possible, see the South 40 during the day, but also at night. Right now many trees and flowers are in bloom. Are you taking the campus tour? What are your interests? There are several hidden gems on campus that are quiet and tranquil that are not always included in the tours such as the East Asian Library and the inside of the chapel. There is one of the first original copies of the Declaration of Independence on display in the main library. There is a carnival on campus this weekend, but will be over if you are going next week.
St. Louis is a city of neighborhoods. There are a lot of great places to check out off campus. The Central West End, The Hill (an Italian neighborhood with outstanding food), The Grove, Clayton and The Loop.
I would also take a lot of time to walk around campus and check out the libraries, food options, classrooms and facilities. They are really top notch!
