My daughter and I will be driving from Chicago to WashU on June 5th for the info session and tour on June 6th. We should have a few hours on the 5th to tour around on our own -- any suggestions for things we should seek out that might not be on the official tour?

Any local restaurants we should try for dinner that night?

We will be staying at the Knight Center.

Any advice and suggestions to make the most of our trip would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You’ll probably want to check out the loop - it is a section of Delmar Boulevard (a bit north of campus) which has some shops and restaurants and other attractions and is pretty popular with students. Personally, I recommend the pizza place “Pi”, but there are plenty of other good dining options.

You could check out Forest Park. It’s right across the road, is bigger than Central Park in NYC, and has a zoo and some museums.

The St. Louis Galleria is a pretty good mall which is fairly close to washu. There are some places to eat both in and nearby the mall.

You could always check out downtown St. Louis - possibly catch a Cardinals game, if that’s what you want.

Thanks! I presume students walk from campus to the loop? Is it fairly safe? I’m glad you reminded me of that – I’d heard of it but forgot about it. Thanks again.

Yep, students walk there all the time. There’s a pedestrian overpass leaving campus which leads directly to the loop. The path is patrolled fairly frequently by campus police, but can be a little creepy if you are alone at night. That being said, both the pass, and the loop itself are pretty safe. I’ve heard of 1 (I think, might be mistaken) student being the victim of a crime while on the loop.
