junior vs. sophomore transfer

GPA-wise, do you think it's permissible to have a slightly lower GPA if you apply as a junior? I'll have a 3.5, but four semesters under my belt instead of two...

sure, why not.

sure, why not.

If "why not?" is your justification, then your answer is completely worthless.

And before saying this post is worthless, it is not: it prevents the OP from attributing value to your response.

nspeds, you seriously need to go out more...

You are full of anger or wrath .

Go out, take a deep breath, hang out with friends, go out to movies or park, and party. You'll feel better. The world will seem more beautiful, and your life will be less miserable.

God Bless you.

^lol...

I think what nspeds meant was to give valuable advice. If you don't have direct answers don't reply. People on here want some sort of feedback, not "stuff".

God Bless both of you.

We can't evaluate a 3.5 GPA without knowing what schools you are looking at.

Fair enough...and thanks to everybody who took the question seriously.

I'm at CU Boulder; I'm looking at Georgetown (CAS), NYU (Gallatin), UChicago, UPenn, Cornell (CAS), Barnard, and Boston University.

I know that many of those are reaches (if not VERY unlikely), but I took very heavy courseloads and difficult classes, and went to a very prestigious high school, where I was on the honor roll for all of senior year (which won't help me much as a junior transfer, I know). My SATs were 1420/1600, and I got an 800 on the Writing SAT II. I was trying not to make this into another chances post, though :)

With a 3.5 your chances look shaky for Georgetown, NYU, UPenn, and Cornell. I don't know anything about UChicago and Barnard. BU should be a match. What is your major?

Yeah, probably well beyond shaky.

English, but I'm thinking of doubling (in art history or Italian). My GPA is low because I took chem for chem majors, physics for physics majors, econ for econ majors, etc. It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do. (I got a C+ in physics, but Bs, A-s, and As in everything else, and I took five classes every semester when most students took four - and in the semester when I took physics, I was taking the maximum load undergrads are allowed).

Just know that they will take into your courseload and difficulty into consideration.

I'd give you better information (high match...low match..etc) but my area of familiarity lies in business school stats.

Yes, as your college education progresses and as you earn more credits their expectations will fall a bit. Check sites, they usually give their GPA expectation depending on the number of credits you currently obtain.

marta...just my guesses:

Georgetown (CAS) - definitely possible
NYU (Gallatin) - yes
UChicago - with good essays, possible
UPenn - possible but probably not
Cornell (CAS) - no
Barnard - yes
Boston University - yes

My predictions are not always correct though ;) but a 3.5 at UC-Boulder + difficult courses since high school + good SATs is a nice combination.

I don't want to sound discouraging, but Cornell CAS has around an 8% acceptance rate for transfers...Penn is around 12%, I think. The rest on your list are more plausible (all above 20%, I believe). Good luck!

a 3.5 is very respectable with those types of classes...its a B+ average, which is generally what colleges look for

Thank you so much for replying! That's very helpful...I wanted to make sure I wasn't being completely nonsensical about the whole process. It's too bad about Penn...I love writing more than anything in the world, and they have the Kelly Writers' House...I've never heard of a program like it anywhere else. Maybe I'll just shoot for it anyway. But it's nice to hear I have a shot at the other schools...

apply to Penn, you never know

Hi
I'm an international student, presently a sophomore and looking to transfer to some really good schools for fall 07. I am a Biology major and my credentials (GPA, Extracurricular activities, leadership skills....) are pretty good.
List of Schools
-WUSTL
-HARVARD
-AMHERST
-BROWN ???

major- Biology
GPA in major- 4.0
Overall GPA- 3.80
-Presently attending a high-ranked private liberal arts college.

Any advice???

Hey transferko,
Depends on your recs, ECs, etc. too, but with a 3.8 I'd say you have a shot. You might get more responses if you start this as a new thread, though; people won't know to look here...good luck!
