Junior with no clue where to begin...

Hey everyone. I'm a junior in HS and now I'm really starting to get into the thick of the college search. I've gotten a ton of mail and everything, but nothing has really stood out to me. Do you guys think you could give me some suggestions as to what might be a good fit for me and where I could start?

Jobs/Internships/Other Activities: Working at local frozen yogurt shop since sophomore year

Other potentially useful info:
-I am a legacy at Cornell and GW
-I will most likely need financial aid/merit scholarship at any school I apply to, so I'd like to see some schools that are somewhat generous with merit scholarships
-I'm definitely going to consider SUNYs
-I know I probably don't have a chance at these schools, but some possible ones I've been thinking about are Notre Dame and NYU. I'd prefer not to be too far from home, and I'd like a school with a solid undergrad business program. Thanks for helping me out!

If Atlanta isn’t too far for you, Emory Goizueta Business school is good. If I am correct, you have to apply your sophomore of Emory to get in. Also, Boston University and Boston College School of Carrol are good in Massachusetts. Have you looked at Babson College Bentley University?

Thanks for the response! Atlanta probably is not too far, but I probably would not want to go any further west than, say, Texas. Do you know, perhaps, how financial aid is at those schools? I’m going to need some decent aid and/or merit scholarships to help cover costs.

You say you are a Cornell Legacy - why not them? Aren’t they “needs met” financial aid? You’ve got a +PSAT, great ECs, and ok classes. You could apply almost anywhere IMHO. You should actually be considering all the schools that are “needs met” FinAid- they are some of the best schools in the country. Don’t sell yourself short. Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply. I could try to shoot for Cornell as a reach possibly - but I’d need to have solid SAT scores. Also, I haven’t done any internships or anything really in the business area. Do you think this will be a problem when my app is being considered since I want to go into business?

There are several threads on this topic in the Financial Aid Forum. Pop over there, and scroll down to find them.

But please do sit your parents down, and have The Big Money Talk with them. You need to know how much they can pay each year, how they feel about you taking on some debt with student loans, and how much money they think you should earn yourself by working during vacations and/or during the school year. When you have those figures, you will know just exactly how hard you are going to have to dig in order to come up with your affordable safety schools. You are fortunate that NYS has some good options in the community colleges and the SUNY/CUNY system.

Wishing you all the best!

NYU gives lousy aid.

You need to figure out your money situation with your parents. You need to find out how much aid you’d qualify for…and you need to find out how much your parents will pay each year.

You will have tons of great choices…it is important to figure out finances but here are a few offhand…
-Cornell has the Dyson business school as part of the Ag School and the Industrial Labor Relations school which I believe are both state-supported (more expensive than a state school but cheaper than the totally private part of Cornell) - and it doesn’t hurt to be a legacy.
-GW has a good business school.
-You should have a shot at ND or NYU if you can afford them (NYU isn’t great with aid in general) and lots of other good options if you can’t.
-SUNY Binghamton is a good place to look.
-Fordham often gives generous merit scholarships to excellent students and has a good business school.
Good luck.

Hey guys, thanks for all the responses. I talked it over with my parents and we figured that we probably won’t qualify at most places for need-based aid, so we’re going to need to hope I get some decent merit scholarships.

Binghamton right now is one I am seriously considering - if I do end up achieving my goal SAT score I should be in. NYU is a fantastic school, but without aid or good merit scholarships, it isn’t going to happen. I’m going to check that Financial Aid forum and see what I can find.

Emory is need blind and gives good financial aid
