We are picking our classes for Junior year this week, and I’m quite conflicted on what classes to take.
As of now I have
Ap Lang
Ap US History
Ap Chemistry
Honors Integrated Math 3
Spanish 3
Tennis
My main confliction comes from my foriegn language class. I would like to strive for a 4.83, but that would mean having to give up spanish for a year and push it to senior year which could possibly mean me forgetting some of it. I would love to learn spanish, but the spanish classes at my school are not challenging me enough to actually learn the laungauge. In order to get into a good college (UC/Ivy), do you guys recommend I keep spanish 3 my junior year, or replace it with an AP class.
I would keep Spanish 3 your junior year. Colleges like to see consistency and language is important.
Can you take Spanish 3 and then AP Spanish senior year?
Spanish 3&4 would be considered core classes, especially if you’re aiming for top private colleges. If instruction is unsatisfactory at your HS, assuming you’re aiming for UCs because you live in California, you could simply take Spanish 2&3 at a community college (would count as HS 3+4).
@inthegarden @Creativechris This really depends on the county you are in. Where I live, you can only do Spanish 3 and then AP Spanish if you take Spanish 4 over the summer (which you have to do at a community college) or learn the material for level 4 by yourself and pass the placement test. The county next to my country which my friend goes to allows them to go from 3 to AP, though. I’d recommend checking this out with someone at your school.
In all seriousness, though, @Creativechris, I recommend you keep Spanish 3. Even for STEM majors, it is recommended you have four years of foreign language in most colleges. Having three years, in my opinion, is not just important for college admissions but important for communication and life, in general. If you got at least a fine grade in Spanish 2, you should be fine for Spanish 3. As someone in Spanish 3 right now, my class is very similar to Spanish 2 except there’s some new grammar and lots of new vocab. Besides that, it’s mostly refining skills from Spanish 1 and 2. This could obviously be different based on where you are, but check with others to see if this applies to you guys as well.
Please let me know if you have any more questions. Best of luck and have a good day!
