Junior year schedule (high school)

I am a sophomore in high school, but we pick our classes in February for the 2010-2011 school year. I'm also thinking about online classes, which start in January. I can take Honors Physics Online. It is one semester at the time. I have an 92 in Honors Chemistry, but I am not a science person. I have the A because I have a fantastic teacher and because of extra credit. I got a B in Honors Bio. My teacher did not recommend taking it online and some other science teachers agreed. BUT, I really want to take it early and I don't want two math classes my junior year. I am a social studies and language arts person. I could try summer school, but they only have College Prep in person. I am only in CP mathematics, I have all other Honors and I am currently in AP World. I got a 3 last year on the exam.

I also could take Honors US History online, but I have been taking AP Social Studies classes since freshman year. I also think US History will be easier for me and I may get my teacher I had freshman year for Human Geo! I want to take AP Euro History, so I would take that instead. If I take Physics online, I could take AP US and AP Euro. They didn't offer Euro this year, but it depends if their is enough students. They usually offer it, but I could take something online and then they may not offer it. I was thinking about French online, but now that I have an 84% in French it wouldn't be such a great idea. They don't offer Honors LA online and I like the class. My AP World teacher wasn't sure if it was a great idea substituting Honors US History with AP Euro. US History could bring my GPA up if I take honors online. I have never taken an online class however.

What do you think of this schedule:
AP US History (physics online)
AP European History
Journalism (Newspaper)
Honors Language Arts
Pre Cal
French II

OR

AP US History (no Euro history)
Honors Physics (I am not going to take AP science or math)
Journalism
Honors Language Arts
Pre Cal
French II

OR

AP Euro History (US online)
Honors Physics
Journalism
Honors Language Arts
Pre Cal
French II

Which classes do you think I should take? If I take physics, is CP really bad in summer school or a lower grade online? I don't know if I can do both semesters either. If I do it online, I would do it next semester and the summer or spring 2011. How is the schedule overall, I would like to get into journalism or screenwriting at NYU, USC, Northwestern, etc? I know most of my AP's will be my senior year. Do you suggest an AP science senior year? I was planning on taking that online (Environmental Science) or AP Bio. I'm sorry for the long post, but if I was your child what would you suggest? My parents don't see the point of taking it online, when I could take classes for free.

I think it’s a bad idea to take Physics online. The labs are super important in understanding Physics, and, since the concepts don’t come easily to you, you really need the help of a good teacher.

Don’t overload your junior year. It’s much better to get A’s in five courses that to have more courses and a lower GPA. Though you say you are a writer - and despite the grammatical errors in your post - I would not recommend both US History and Euro in the same year. These are both rigorous courses with extensive papers and projects.

Junior year is a key year in the application process, and you need to have a successful report card at the end of it, as that is one of the main elements that colleges will focus on. You are smart to consider these issues beforehand. Don’t set yourself up to fail.

I would not take APUSH and AP Euro at the same time. My D has AP Euro right now and the work load is killing her. There is no way she could do another course like that at the same time. Of course, schools and the workloads for AP courses might vary - at D’s school the work load for the AP history courses is huge, but everyone (over 50 kids) who took AP Euro last year passed and all but one student got a 4 or 5. I would also be reluctant to take Physics online. Have you considered taking a community college course this summer instead of a high school summer course?

Do not take Physics online. My course had no labs and a crappy teacher, but still being in class to listen to the 3 problems a day was still important.

Do not take two AP history classes at the same time, you will end up hanging yourself.

In light of this, try your second option.

I agree with the above advice. You do not want to take a course, physics, in a weak area online. You need to have live help available. Take AP US or AP Euro as a junior. Our D didn’t take a fourth year of science in high school. She didn’t anticipate majoring in a science. She did just fine in college admissions without a fourth year of science. Check the admission requirements of your state universities, etc. to be sure a fourth year of science is not required for admission.

Thanks everyone! I am required to take four years of science to graduate high school, fyi. I have an 80% in AP and we get 10 extra points added to the class. I received an 80% and an 82% last year without the points. They take off the 10 points when doing GPA and add .5.

The big question is, is it worth taking US History online so I can take AP Euro? I know that for AP Euro, that the teacher did not have one kid get below a 3 on the exam. He only had one class though. It will be about $500 for both semesters online. I also hate labs for science, lol! I am also thinking about Environmental Science online which should be easier to do. I could also take astronomy or anatomy online. I prob. could take Physics at a CC, but is it worth it? I am not the best finals taker and I know its a big portion of your grade at college.

I am thinking I may go with the 2nd choice of classes.

For senior year, this is what I may take:

AP Language
AP Macro and AP Government (one semester each)
AP Psychology
Calculus (regular)
Journalism
French III

I would have a total of 7 AP classes. And sorry for the poor grammar but I type quickly!

Is the online course AP or regular? Remember that some states have graduation requirements, is this why you need to take it?

The online Environ Science/Astronomy course is a CP course. You need four science classes to graduate. Physics is also required to graduate.

There is honors physics and regular physics online. Also, is it a bad idea to take some elective classes online because it would raise your GPA?

Sorry, I meant the US History course.

Why would raising your GPA be a bad thing?

They have honors US history and CP online. Do you think college’s would care that I would be taking other online classes just to raise my GPA. I had a pretty rough freshman year.

Just out of curiousity, why are you so set on taking courses online? I will be taking a math course online next year, which seems like it will be productive because of the great amount of student/teacher interaction, but only because there are no more math classes to take at my school. I know that any other reason would be frowned at by our dean of students or college counselors. I believe you can take the necessary classes and boost your GPA while taking classes at your school and saving your parents the extra money.

I also agree with the above posts that two AP History courses will be impossible to take in one year. I currently take AP US History and have to read about 300 pages in two weeks to prepare for tests and have about 40-60 pages of typed lecture notes to study from. Make sure you know what you are getting yourself into before you decide.

Good luck!

I am set because of different reasons. If I took US History online, I would have room to take AP Euro. If I take science online, I don’t have to take it my senior year. It is to get ahead. But I was also thinking about other courses to help my GPA. I am going to pay for the classes myself, my parents wouldn’t pay for it. I’m prob going to use XMAS money and I have saved up. I’m just not sure if I should take Honors US History online, so I can take AP Euro.

But remember, you don’t want to take USH and Euro at the same time. Do you have any experience with the level of difficulty of a CP course?

I wouldn’t be taking it at the same time. I would take it next semester and in the summer. According to my AP world history teacher, honors is much easier then AP. A student got an 80 in AP, but made a 99 in honors. He made it seem it was a lot easier. But this wasn’t online either. I do think I would enjoy US History better, but I think I would still learn a lot online. I have never taken a honors or cp class in social studies. I am in CP math, but that is it and it is my first year in it.

I think I’m going to take Honors US History online. I am taking the three number option, :)

Remember that online courses actually finish the material. You know how teachers in school don’t make it past WWI? Well, that doesn’t happen online. Online courses can be much more work and much harder (and the grading can be tougher) than in-person classes.

I would never recommend taking an an AP and Online honors history class.

Do you have to take 4 years of math to graduate, too?

I would not try to “get ahead,” but, instead, keep things sane for whatever year you are in.

And concentrate on your interests and strengths. It is okay not to do as well, in, say math and science, when your interests lie in English and history.

That has never happened to me, usually teachers will just move more quickly on some sections then others. My AP teacher could never do that because WWI will def be on the AP exam.

I could have NEVER taken an online class this semester. I have swim team and that takes a lot of my time. I have a lot more free time during spring semester. I can prob. take semester two in the summer or the following year. You need four years of math, science and language arts to graduate. You only need three years of social studies. I will have four because I took AP Human Geo last year. There was many kids who didn’t take SS last year.

As of now, I am just going to take Honors US History online and will probably take Astronomy my junior year online (spring/summer). I wanted to take physics online because I wanted another elective (Euro History). But I see that why it would have been a terrible idea! I am not doing bad in my science or math class either, btw. I have an 92%in Honors Chem. For me, it depends on the teacher and not the class. I got an 83/85% in LA last year and I now have an 96%. I got an 84/86 in Bio and have an 92 in Chem. My AP grade is the same and I liked my last years teacher better.

I may ask my guidance counselor, but last time I went in to the guidance office and she never got back to me. Thanks for the help everyone!

Hey everyone. I changed my mind and I really don’t have much time to take US History online this semester, plus I rather take it in class. How does this plan sound?

Summer 2010:
Astronomy (community college)
Environmental Science (community college)
Law online (high school course)

I need 4 years of science to graduate, so would that mean I would have to take two different science classes at a CC to get the credit? Does one semester = one year? I could always take one of the science classes spring of my junior year.

Junior year:
AP US History
Pre Cal
Honors Physics
Honors Language Arts
French II
Journalism (newspaper)

Senior year:
AP Euro
AP Govern/AP Macro (one per semester)
AP Psychology
AP Language
Journalism (yearbook)
French III

*I would take math at the CC or should I just take math at school and take away AP Euro?

Your senior year sounds like a killer. I’d do math instead of one of the APs.

Yeah I agree, thanks! I’m thinking if I should just do dual enrollment at a local college and take my weak area’s in high school (french, math and science). My school offers a lot of AP’s but I want to start taking college courses. Do schools like NYU, USC, and Northwestern dislike this option? I have read AP’s are way better. This college is not a CC either, but not a top 100 school.
