Junior year schedule

This discussion was created from comments split from: Junior year schedule.

How does it compare to what top students at your school take? Would you be able to take honors us history to alleviate the rigor a bit? However, your schedule looks good, especially since the study hall will help you get everything done in the Fall.

Some students at my school don’t care and take no APs, and other tested out of sophomore prerequisites to take ap chem and ap physics this year. I know of a few kids that are going to do the same schedule I’m doing, and one does the same sport I’m involved in. I also asked my world history teacher the same question and he said that he would not recommend dropping to honors us history because the ap covers the same material but just goes faster and it you get a 4 or 5 on the ap exam you can test out of a semester of it in college.

Have you already taken an AP course? If so, you understand the additional work. Definitely be sure to have a study hall. APUSH at my son’s school is difficult and with the two sciences will come lab/group work. He is a current junior and taking 4 AP courses. It is doable if you stay focused and keep up with the work. Keep in mind colleges will want to see a strong GPA through junior year.

One word of caution, there will continue to be good teachers and bad. You noted “unable to teach” teachers. My son has one now. This could cause a more difficult time next year. Maybe check with others and see what they say about the teachers in APUSH, AP Lang, and the sciences.

On your comment with the AP exams, yes you can possibly test out or get credit, but it greatly varies by school. If you want to research, you can google AP credit and the name of a few schools to see their policies. Most selective schools tend to give less credit or maybe only credit as an elective. There are many good schools that will give you credit for a 4 or 5 that may cover general education requirements. It all depends on your choices.

Okay, thank you. I have heard that both the AP science classes have very strong teachers and the “teacher that couldn’t teach” was a brand new elective teacher who is no longer teaching. I will ask the teachers themselves and students taking the classes their opinions before signing up for them.

Hello, I’m currently a sophomore in high school and we have just gotten our course optioning forms for the junior year. The current selection of courses that I’m interested in consists of 1. Honors pre-calc 2. AP Language 3.APUSH 4. Spanish 4 5.AP Chemistry 6.Ap Physics 7. Study hall/oral comm I will also be taking AP computer programming at a local university over the summer.
I’m likely to major in chemical engineering in college and am very interested in the sciences and maths. I’m an A student with a good work ethic and motivation to get hw done and study for tests.(~ 3.75 gpa due to two classss freshman year with terrible/ often sick and unable to teach teachers. )However, I have had friends, teachers, and the counselor tell me that this schedule seems very difficult and rigorous (Although the chem teacher and counselor both told me that they think that it would be hard but doable for me). I am most worried about the two AP sciences and APUSH, but I don’t see any other way to have a rigorous schedule to look good for college, and be able to take physics c my senior year. The AP chem and AP physics teachers are good, but I have heard that both classes require a lot of work. I will also be playing a fall sport that will take 2 hours a day, but I will have a study hall that semester.Does anyone have advice about this schedule especially with the aforementioned difficult APs?Any advice would be appreciated!

I was advised against my proposed schedule on my last post and ended up taking: 1. honor pre-calc 2. Spanish 4 3. Physics 4. Oral comm/study hall 5. Ap chemistry 6. APUSH 7. AP English language. I am not worried that with 3 APs in junior year and 4 total this far in high school that my schedule is not rigorous enough especially when I talk to friends who are taking 4,5, and 6 APs ( even though some aren’t as demanding such as AP pysch and AP computer science. Should I ask for a schedule change and try to add another AP or should I take an online AP to try to keep up with the completion of students around the nation trying to get into competitive colleges like me?? Any ideas or advise would help!

Your schedule is fine but if you wish to add one, you could add AP CS principles.

I don’t have room… should I do it online or through a university?

You can see if you can do it online but your schedule is fine. Don’t worry.
