Is this question (the one that asks applicants to "share" some of their favorite books, poems, etc.) supposed to prompt a list? Or is this yet another full-out 500 word essay?

As much as I love UChicago, three essay supplements is starting to bug me -_-

Use this however you can to make yourself look more interesting. And it really is optional–plenty of students have been accepted without doing it.

Kids have written lists. Kids have written short answers. Kids have written full essays. Kids have skipped it entirely–and I would bet you there are plenty of kids in every category who got in. There’s really no right answer.

If you can’t think of something interesting to say in that space, I might just not bother.

You can do whatever you want with that one.

I wrote an extemely short essay (I think maybe fewer than 200 words) about my favorite book. Got accepted EA.

Personally, I say, do it. Why not? Take every available chance you have to “speak” to the adcomms beyond the transcripts, the scores, etc. Demonstrate to them “you” and not “your scores.”

I’m applying this year and so far I’ve written about 250 words on my favorite song. I might pick another topic, like my favorite book, and write another 250 words about that too (but only if I end up having enough time to).
