So, I’m a sophomore and here are my grades from freshman year and my averages thus far sophomore year (3 terms so far):
~Freshman~
Physics HRs - 97
Algebra HRs - 95
English HRs - 96
French HRs - 97
World History HRs - 95
~Sophomore~
AP Stats - 86
APUSH - 91
Eng HRs - 96
Geometry HRs - 94
French HRs - 96
Chemistry HRs - 97
Clearly, my grades have dropped significantly. I was number one in my class by a decent margin last year, but the gap is closing this year. I am trying so hard, but I am still making many mistakes. Also, I had to take a season off from track for health reasons and I have a friend whose grades are just as good as mine this year (if not better) who has been taunting me because she went to Nationals during the season I took off. I am a hospital volunteer, on the school paper (first Journalism I student to be published in physical paper), and a French & Geometry tutor. I’ve gone to states for cross country and track, but I’ve also been a lesser athlete this year as well.
My target college is Brown, but now I feel that I am going to have to reassess. Thoughts on my situation? Have I lost it all?
I also was my middle school “valedictorian” and have won gold medals in the Grand Concours.
You should never be scared about your chances. Apply to a range of schools that you like, including safeties and matches. You are doing yourself a disservice by fretting about what can’t be changed and by pinning your hopes on one school.
ETA: Brown is a target for no one. It’s a reach for all. Colleges do not count middle school achievements, unless they are something extremely notable.
Please don’t think that you have “lost it all.” There are many many colleges that you can get into. Do your best. Don’t focus on that class rank…stop checking it…you can’t control other people, just focus on what you control. You don’t need a friend like one who is taunting you about your track accomplishments vs his/hers.
What am I missing? I don’t see a huge decline in grades. You have ONE grade in the 80’s and everything else in the 90s. One grade is not going to be the difference in whether or not you get into any college.
BC might be a match for your stats, but that doesn’t mean it’s a sure thing. It is very selective, and is likely to become more so. Next year it will institute ED, so it will be even tougher to get in RD. You will need other matches and safeties.
