Essays and recommendations; Average more liklely. I am not exteremely bright or anything like that.
I am interested in applying to:

Here are what I think,
OMG no-way reaches:
UPenn
U-CHI
Duke
Cornell

Reaches:
UNC-CH(in-state and 1/3 of all the seniors get in from my school each year,so I think i will be fine)
NC State

Safeties:
UNC-Greensboro
UNC-Charolotte

My intended major is History. So what do you guys think? or is there anywat I can improve my chances at any of these schools? How some more schools that I can apply to? I want to go to some place colder.

Thanks for all the help.

:D

bump the gpa up and hopefully improve on the SAT I and id say you have a good shot at cornell ED.

also, nc state is not a reach, its a safety.

id look at emory, george washington, georgetown, northwestern, michigan, and a few others if you can bump up that gpa.

GET THAT GPA UP!

About what range would I get my GPA up to?

I think I can bump that to around 3.5ish by the end of the 1st semster of my senior year.

So is there anything else I can do to make up that GPA? Like do more community service or something like that?

well community service might help...but for ivy level colleges, you have to distinguish yourself on some scale...and yea, if you can get your gpa up as high as possible, you have a shot.

with that low of a gpa...i would prob rule out duke and upenn unless you apply early...but cornell/chicago is possible

More community service probably would not help to get you into the most selective schools. But if you get your GPA to 3.5 and M+V to 1350 or above, you could consider schools like Brandeis, NYU, Oberlin, etc. If you get an M+V of 1390 or above, you could consider schools like Cornell, Georgetown, and University of Michigan/Ann Arbor, although they would be a reach. UPenn, UChicago, and Duke would still probably be out of reach though.

I'm going to brutally honest here. I applied ED to Cornell, and while I was deferred not rejected, I think your chances would be extremely slim even ED. I have a 34 ACT (=1520M+V) and a 3.6UW GPA. So, quite frankly, with your GPA even if you get near perfect scores, Cornell ED would still be a reach.

Your assessments are pretty accurate except that NC State should be a safety and UNC a good match. Your reaches are such extreme reaches and you should really be applying to more realistic reaches. If you applied to a place like Emory or Tufts early decision, you'd have a decent chance of getting in. As for the Michigan suggestion, while the UNCs are good ideas since you're in-state, other publics may not be a good idea since they are so numbers-based.

I think as you are now you need to re-focus your reaches. I don't think any of them will happen, your rank is too low. I'd ED UNC - its a great school and you will have in-state tuition. I think you are in the Vanderbilt/ Emory range as reaches, and UNC is about on par with them anyway.

chocolate...we had 4 kids who were accepted ed to cornell and 2 of them had stats worse than this.

vandy, emory, george washington, georgetown, michigan...all great schools thats are more than plausible...

and if you find that 1 school you love apply to it early no matter how slim you think your chances are...as an instate will ok stats, no reason why you shouldnt get in regular at UNC

This class rank makes the top schools nearly impossible. Asian is difficult too. Look at the schools's stats and come up with a more realistic list.

I think in terms of private schools you "might" have a chance at a reach, but I would doubt it due to rank. My guess is you are looking at the schools ranked between 15-30, and in that case you might as well go to UNC. Its such a great opportunity to be in-state.

Hmm....

Here is my new updated list,
Duke
Wake Forest
Emory
UNC
NC state

any thoughts?

Forget Duke. Even for those in-state, it's as tough as an Ivy to get into. Wake Forest and Emory would probably be reachy, but not out of reach. UNC and NC State are a match and safety respectively.

ya, just got my report card for the semster today...

1 A, 4Bs, and a C....
3.0 UW
4.3 W

Gosh, school suck booty......

I guess I need to suck up and ace the next semster....:(
This always happen, I generally always do HORRIBLE in the first semster....

Ok officially cross Duke off your list and with a C, UNC-CH may not be a match.

lol, okay....But Duke basketball is awesome though....

Here is additional info about me< I had to digg deep down into my head to remmeber all these...probably wont make a difference though......
Geometry team (9th grade)
Algebra II team (10th grade)
Asian American Club (10th and 11th grade)
Track(11th grade, additional sport)
And my dad is a lab director at UNC-CH and I am doing an internship with a UNC history professor this summer.

Thats about it. I figured I be happy at UNC since I love their campus.....:D

things you only did for two years wont look impressive at all. colleges might see this as lack of commitment.

Thanks for all the help guys.

I think I will just keep work on my GPA and SAT and hope for the best.

Thanks again and good luck on you guys' college admisson process; hope you guys get into wherever you guys want to go.

I beg to differ.

I hope you crossed UNCC off your list. Trust me, you do NOT want to end up there. Charlotte is a horrible city for college students. App State (or UNCA) would be a much better safety. NC State is a good match, but their history program isn't the greatest. UNC is probably your best bet- apply EA and your chances are pretty solid.

Duke is probably not going to happen, but Emory is slightly more realistic (esp. Oxford). Wake Forest is becoming increasingly selective; the average SAT of admitted students last year was 1380. It's a slight reach.

If you're looking for somewhere colder, the University of Rochester might be a good match.
