Suggest Some Schools Please

JUNIOR(ITIS) - I'm posting here because one of my really smart friends (2190 SAT, 4.66 W, etc) was deferred from UNC.. And while another friend (1920 SAT, 4.2 W, etc) was accepted to UNC... so now I'm a bit scared..

Bio:
Asian, Male, immigrated to US when I was almost 10 =\
North Carolina, Very Competitive School (At least top 50 on America's best HS)
I moved to NC from MD like 2 weeks before Junior year.. keep that in mind :)

Scores (Worst case scenarios - meaning Cs in APs):
SAT: 2150 (780 Math, 680 RC)
SAT II: Not yet, will take Biology and Math probably (I'll explain Biology later)
APs: Stat - 5, I'm taking 5 this year
GPA: UnWeighted 3.2-3.6 (Worst case - Straight Bs) Weighted 4.4-4.8 (Worst Case - Straight Bs)
Class Rank: IDK, at least top 10% out of about 600-700 Students.

Courses:
Hardest available I think, but I moved to NC in this past summer from Maryland, so was really hard for me to adapt to the different policies of the school system.
6 APs so far, 6 APs next year
AP Stat - 5
AP English (B so far)
AP Calc (A+ so far)
AP US History (A so far)
AP Enviro (B so far)
AP Biology (C or D) - this is because I was away for the final AND the make-up date due to family issues in China... and my GAY teacher just said.. TOO BAD.. My parents tried to help, but no use.
Planned for next year - AP English 12, AP Calc II, AP Gov, AP Physics, AP Psych, AP Euro (I still havn't planned the last 2, but I don't really know what I should take..)

Service
- Probably around 200+ Hours
- Will volunteer/shadow a doctor at Duke Medical Center (Mom works there)

Ok, so all in all, my GPA SUCKS. Please consider the worst case scenarios. I'm a huge slacker/procrastinator, lol

Oh, and here are some school I'm considering:
**UNC - CH (Probably gonna EA)
Duke (Reach, but my dream school)
Vandy
Hopkins
NC State (Safety)
Clemson?
UVA
Chicago (Reach)
Washington @ St. Louis (Reach)
etc... Please suggest!

And I'm interested in going on to Med School :)

Thanks in advance!

UNC/Charlotte - Match
Duke - Big Reach
Vandy - Match
Hopkins - Slight Reach/Reach
NC State - Safety
Clemson - Low Match/Safety
UVA - Reach
Chicago - Reach
Washington @ St. Louis - Reach

You need matches and low matches. Here's a bunch of good, but less selective schools you might want to consider. The schools at the top of the list are High Matches and perhaps even Slight Reaches. The ones at the bottom, Low Matches and Near Safeties.

Tufts
Washington and Lee
Emory
Notre Dame
Georgetown
U of C Berkley
William and Mary
Bowdoin
Haverford
Macalester
Davidson
Colby
University of Michigan
Univer. Of Southern CA
Colgate
Brandeis
Oberlin
Bates
Tulane
Hamilton
Grinnell
Wake Forest
Kenyon
Connecticut College
Boston College
University of Richmond
Univ. of Rochester
NYU
Lehigh

Great list from amtron. Just keep in mind that most of the schools on this list want to know that they are your first choice. Any school may reject you regardless of how overqualified you may be,if they sense that you are using them as a safety or back-up. Conversely most of these schools,e.g. Davidson, will love you if they know that they are your first choice.

UNC/Charlotte - Match

Chapel Hill? That's what I meant, lol...
And MANY MANY thanks for the list, amptron. I only recognize some of them, such as Emory (very nice school that I'd like to go to), ND, G-Town, Berkley (probably reach for me since I am on the opposite coast), Tufts, U of Mich (OOS), Wake (too expensive), W+M (don't know much about), Davidson (don't know much about), and BC.

Garrity - Thanks for the response as well. Right now, I'm thinking of only applying to UNC-Chapel Hill (EA), Vandy, and NC State because I don't really want to waste my parent's money if I get rejected from schools like Duke, Washington, Chicago, and Emory. I mean, I'll probably go out around the East Coast looking at schools over the Summer, but still.. I want a school close to home so I don't have to do my laundry and stuff :P

Btw, how much will my Unweighted GPA hurt me? And how about my AP Bio grade (I got As in both quarters)..

Also, how do Liberal Arts schools (like you mentioned) compared to full-scale research Universities like UNC-Chapel Hill (first choice probably just because I am in state)?

Good LAC's -Colgate and Holy Cross. Holy Cross-near Boston- has a great pre-med program and HC has very good placement into med schools. Holy Cross also has strong Classics -Latin program.

Thanks, any other opinions?

Bump?
10 char

Uhh... Anyone else?

You can mention the AP Bio thing in the section of your app that asks for additional information. Keep it short and don't whine, just explain that you had to miss the final and the make up due to family issues in China.

Cool, thanks bud!

So anyone else with predictions and advice on which school I should apply to for a good pre-med program?

Bump
10 char

Is there even room to put all that on an application? @_@

Perhaps

..............

i'm at haverford right now and the pre-med program here is really strong. we also just got a new president who was a big cancer researcher at UPenn so that should significantly help the program in the future.

Thanks, but what do you think of my schools at these great pre-med schools?

Btw, Counselor statement got today: 3.3 UW (with the Bio grade, but my counselor will explain it on apps), 4.6 W (again, with Bio grade)

I'm guessing you go to Myers Park, Harding, North Meck, Enloe, or Grimsley? Those are the top NC high schools I can think of, excluding NCSSM.

UNC- match
Duke- slight reach
Vanderbilt- match
JHU- slight reach
NC State- safety
Clemson- safety
UVA- reach
Chicago- match
WUStL- reach

Duke is a slight reach because you're in-state, which gives you an advantage. If Duke is your top choice, why not apply ED?

Chicago puts an enormous amount of weight on their essays and the subjective parts of your application, so I wouldn't necessarily consider it a reach. Keep in mind that they offer EA.

I suggest pruning your list. I'd definitely drop Clemson and probably UVA. Chicago is pretty different from the others.

Most top LACs do well in med school admissions. Davidson, for example, has a very good medical and law school placement record.

Sweet thanks, I'm now looking at a lot of LACs because I'd like a small college where I can get the most out of Professors via interactions and actually learning the material through small classes, but I heard they were harder than most top colleges (Duke, Hopkins, etc) and cost more than them too.

But yeah, thanks a lot for the advice, bud.

Bump

Yeah nice list from amptron, but schools like emory, georgetown, berkeley, and ND are just as much reaches as the schools on your original list.
