Hey there. I was deferred from the University of Michigan a few weeks back, and am starting to wonder what my chances are during the Regular Decision season, if they're any better or (god forbid) any worse. My teachers were all fairly shocked with the people in my school who managed to get deferred (I think we only had one accepted student, but she was going into the Art school, I think...)

Anyhow, basic stats rundown:

Application: School of Literature, Science and the Arts - Political Science (Pre-Law)
Race: Asian (Japanese)
Gender: Female
GPA: 3.67 UW, no idea what it is weighted (our school doesn't support grade weighting)
ACT: 31 (33 Superscored, but I don't think UMich does superscoring). The Essay score was an 11 (out of 12)
Courseload: The most rigorous courseload our school can offer, the highlight being dual enrollment in English 101 and 102 from a community college nearby (got an A in those!). That having been said, our school does not have many options at all - only two APs (Statistics and Calculus) are even offered.

ECs: Marching Band (2 years, Section Leader for Pit Percussion both times)
Jazz Band (4 years, elite band within the school, Section Leader for Piano this year)
Concert Band (3 years, Section Leader for Piano and Pit Percussion)
Piano (12 years, have done it my entire life, have received numerous awards from the statewide Piano federation and high marks on all testing)
NHS Senior member
ACT Committee Senior member
Almost 100 hours of community service, soon to raise this year
Varsity Quiz Bowl member (set to be Team Captain this year)
Student Paths Committee member and volunteer

Hooks: I dunno, Asian, low income, first generation student with a father actively in the military.

My essays were supposedly very good, and I know that both of my recommendations (from my Statistics teacher and my counselor) were superb.

Of the three deferral letters I got the "best" one (supposedly), it was very kind in tone. I know my GPA is not stellar in comparison to the rest of CC's, but do you think my essays and my very through involvement in ALL of my ECs will be able to help me? I'm just incredibly confused and scared about this all. The University of Michigan is my dream school. I'll do absolutely anything within my power in order to go.

Do I have a shot? :(
