I guess this is another chance me thread...

I got deferred to 7th semester grades, and I'm just wondering if I really have any chance at all. I guess being deferred instead of straight up rejected is a good sign but... I know MSU is a bit of a reach for me, but it's also my top choice so I'm really hoping I get in. So here it goes.

White, OOS student from one of the top publics in CA.

2.9 UW gpa (Upward trend that started last year, should get over a 3.0 this semester)
25 ACT (31 reading, 26 english, 23 math, 21 science)
SAT - 660 critical reading, 500 math, 620 writing
Bottom 50% class rank

4 years of english (2 of which were advanced english)
4 years of math
3 years of history
3 years of french
2 years of baritone choir (Earned varsity letter in music)
1 year teaching assistant

Extra curriculars:
Recorded an album with a local band
School men's choir - 2 years, earned varsity letter
Amateur Photographer
Played drums for 6 years, played in school band, local band, and jammed with most local musicians
Lived in England for 2 years (I guess thats kind of an EC?)
Taught drums
Big brothers big sisters
Altar boy at local church
Founding member of school Meditation Club
Founding member of Musicians Networking Club
Planned benefit concerts to help build schools in Africa
Played other benefit concerts with local band
Refereed local youth soccer league
Fed the homeless at a soup kitchen for 3 years

I struggled with ADHD and Executive Dysfunction in high school, which I mentioned in my personal statement.

I'd really appreciate any feedback, and thanks a lot for reading,

Normally, I’d say reach with a sub-3.0 GPA. However, it seems like MSU is trying to get more OOS students (which makes sense given our budget crisis here in Michigan).

I’d probably say you have less than 50/50 chance, but you should try because there is definitely a chance!

Thanks, that’s kind of what I was hoping for.

And my 7th semester grades show definite improvement, I got a 3.4 gpa with a tough schedule. I also got a B with my retake of Chem A this year to cancel out a D- in it from my Jr year, so that should make a difference in my overall GPA.

Also, would it be helpful for me to send in letters of rec with my 7th semester grades? My teachers didn’t finish them in time for me to send them in with my application, but I have 2 now.

I would definitely submit a letter of rec or 2 with your 7th semester grades - if well-written, the letters could only help make your case that you are a student that MSU should admit. Good luck!

GPA is definitely the issue. A sub 3.0 is a definite reach. A 3.3 or above is usually a match. The fact that they want to see you seventh semester grades and you show improvement is a good sign.
