just another hopeless case

Hello CC,

New here. I live in a third world country. There aren't as many options available to me as there are to you guys. Consider yourselves lucky. First of all, unlike everyone else I have been totally misguided. Thus, my stats don't really reveal my true potential (a claim I usually use to redeem myself).

Long story short: I have messed up.

I live in Pakistan. I have 3 As in my A'Level and 6 As 2 Bs in my O'Level. 1830 in my SAT I (which I am so embarrassed to show anyone that I had to make a new account here using a pseudonym). As for SAT II: 800 Maths II-C, 750 Physics and 780 Chemistry.
3.3 is my current GPA which is going to fall further this semester. Btw, I am student of computer engineering.

I cant continue in my current college. Its a waste of time. They arent teaching anything. Its all a joke. I have totally stopped studying in college. I am using internet to teach myself so that I dont slack behind much and do something worthwhile in these 4 years.

I tried transferring. There is just one university in my country that I like. And they have denied me financial aid. Not much hope left.

I want to transfer abroad into a really cheap university that would accept me. I know it won't really solve my problem. But its fine. There is so much to learn and so much to do. Anyone can climb a ladder up there. Its not the same here. You cant go up.
Your recommendations? Or suggestions?

Most schools reserve the vast majority of their financial aid for domestic students, and most scholarships do as well; it can be very tough trying to get it as an international student. I guess I would say two things: first of all, it’s not a hopeless case, and you should definitely do your research and try to contact schools that you think might be interested in your story. Secondly, I wouldn’t necessarily characterize Pakistan as a hopeless 3rd world country, especially as far as education goes. The Nat’l Science & Tech University, Karachi and Quaid-e-Azam are all actually rather good schools, so even if you don’t end up finding a way to get out of the country for undergrad you could transfer to at least one of them, work hard, and go abroad for GRADUATE education. I believe a majority of international students in the US do their undergraduate studies abroad, anyway.
On the other hand, if you really want to get out and can’t seem to find a US school to offer you aid, you could think about looking at UK schools. They tend to be much cheaper than US ones.

Look into Florida International University. It is in Miami,fl. Its my current school. Its not ranked highly, but i think its an amazing school. There are lots of international students, and a 3.3 would probably qualify you to enter the honors college. There are lots of interrnationals which means they must be doing something to attract them right? I know we hsve s pretty good computer science program.

@ananapp:
That’s plan B. And UK might be a little cheaper. But if I get into some kind of financial problem, I’ll have noone to help me out. On the contrary, I have lots of family members living in the US willing to support me. But I’ll look into it.

@Agent:
Not bad. I have bookmarked the website. Will do a thorough study later.

You should be most embarrassed about creating a pseudonym because you’re ashamed of your SAT scores, 1800 or whatever you got is still pretty good… You need some confidence. I can’t imagine any school in the United States being cheaper than the school you were accepted to in Pakistan. You’d also be in a familiar place and could get home much more easily if you needed to. With that being said, I would forget any idea of transferring to the US or the UK. Finish up at your current university or transfer to the other one you’ve been accepted to, try to get good grades, (shouldn’t be that difficult if your current school is a “joke”) and then think about grad school somewhere abroad.
