I just applied, and I’m a little stressed. Of course I have backup safety schools, but I’d be great to get some feedback on what you guys think my chances are of getting into U Dubb. I got to public school in California, GPA: 3.38/3.48 for 9th-11th. I’m taking hard classes: last year I took English 3 Honors, AP Chemistry and passed them with Bs. This year I’m taking AP Physics, AP Comp Government, AP Calc AB. I will probably pass those classes with Bs, except Calc AB which I think I will get an A in. My ECs are Boy Scouts (6 years), Cross Country (JV 11th-12th grade), Wind Ensemble (2nd chair sax 10th-11th grade), Fencing (6th-10th grade). I’m also an Eagle Scout. I have work experience as a camp counselor - four weeks X2 summers. An honest but not rude opinion would help. Thanks,
Ya boy - Mylesah
Wind Ensemble actually 4th-10th grade
Test scores?
GPA is a bit low but not too low to be considered.
ECs are good, but I’m pretty sure they don’t really care what kind of ECs you did before high school but it couldn’t hurt to mention.
Course load is pretty good.
I’d say from what you’ve given you have an alright chance, probably on the lower end though. It really just depends on what your test scores are.
Oh thanks, I forgot I got a 640 (35 reading, 29 writing), and 680 math on the SAT
Yeah it looks like last year, only 6.52% of enrolled freshman had a HS GPA of 3.25-3.49 and 42% had your SAT math score (converted to old SAT) and roughly 35-37% had your SAT writing/reading score. Also only about 20% of UW students are out of state.
You can check the data yourself here: http://opb.washington.edu/content/common-data-set
So yeah, it looks like your test scores are on the lower end, but still good and your GPA kinda hurts. Hopefully your course load, ECs and essays balance that out!
Good luck man!
I think your chances are below 50%. My son, from a competitive CA public high school, got in a couple of years ago with a weighted GPA of 3.9, unweighted about 3.7. SAT score a little above 1900. His ECs were band (1st chair sax), track, wrestling, CSF, martial arts, church daycamp leader and CSF volunteer activities. He got into all the lower tier UC’s (mainly essay was not good because we were hands off), but chose UW. UW has gotten more competitive since then. He is now in the Foster Business school at UW.
I am not sure how UW works with seeing the progress on the AP courses you are taking in your senior year. I know the UC’s will request a supplemental information from you around January 2017, if you are borderline.
My number 2 son, now a senior in the same public school, is also applying to UW along with the UC’s and a couple of CA private schools. His stats and ECs are higher and better than the older son. He told me the other day, he would rather stay in CA even if he had to go to UC Merced. He’ll probably get into more schools than just UCM.
Are you considering CA schools with your reach (i.e., lower tier UC’s, CSU’s, etc.)? I know the UC app deadline is paased and I think the same for CSU’s. There are still other schools accepting applications.
@prayersforUW lol I don’t know what that means, I was 90% sure I wouldn’t get in (this is my reach school) but I wanted to get some perspective. Anyways thanks for commenting @UCBUSCalum and @maoxingren . You were right but I got into some other schools that were pretty good and it looks like I’ll be going to to IU for Buissness or Minnesota for economics.
