Just diagnosed with mono...

Hey all,

I just got back from the doctor, I have mono. I have had it for five days. Had a sore throat yesterday, but not today. I do feel a little fatigued, but nothing too bad. I more or less feel like I have a bad cold. Does this mean I have a mild case of mono? I need to do well the rest of this semester so I am hoping so. What should I do?

Sounds like a question for your doctor…
And no matter what he/she says, only you can tell how you feel

That does sound a bit mild. I felt like I was dying when I had it…and it flared up some other health symptoms which made it even worse. You are contagious for about 2-3 months though even after you feel fine again, so keep that in mind. If you start having body aches and difficulty breathing from your sore throat the doc may prescribe prednisone or something like it, which took everything away for me in like a day (minus the other non-mono symptoms that were irritated). I also took Tylenol Extra Strength which helped.

Make sure you get as much rest as possible. Lots of fluids. The usual stuff. Don’t do too much physical activity such as lifting/pushing heavy things.

I had mono when I was 18 and I did not feel too sick, just a sore throat and fatigue. You really should not be attending class. You have to rest. If you don’t, it can turn into something worse and you can also spread it if you don’t rest until it is out of your system. The person I contracted it from thought they were over it, but where not.

My son had mono twice in college and my daughter had it once. When my son had it the second time I thought he would need to come home…he was that sick. Both kids slept alot and attending class was really pushing it…they both did but it was not the best situation to say the least. My son came home every weekend for a month since he had off on Fridays. This allowed him to sleep undisturbed and eat well. He was able to finish the semester and graduate on time. My daughter had it at the beginning of one of her semesters and it lingered for a long while. Had she not been living at home I don’t think she would have had an easy time of it. Her spleen was enlarged and she was running a fever most days.

It sounds like you might be presenting with a mild case right now. The best advice I could give you is don’t party on the weekends, get alot of rest and eat well. Mono could start out somewhat mild but if you push it it could get worse and linger longer. Rest is really key. Did the doctor say anything about your spleen? If it is enlarged be very careful about physical activity.

I hope you are feeling better and completely well very soon.
