Just finished interview :(

thx every1 for your advice
i had my interview and it didn't go so well....
it was suppose to be for 45min, but it ended in 34min, i checked my watch, couldn't answer some of the questions though!
i got the question about "change one thing in your school, wat would it be?" i said i wanted a better set of janitor staff :S (it caught me off guard)
another one was about "How do you think you'll behave differently at Dartmouth than at your high school?" i was like :" i am going to grow in to a more mature person and work hard..."
most of my answers were short, i think that resulted in such a short interview and also, i checked my watch 2wice and it kind of annoyed him :(
oh well, he did say a interview can't make or break you, so i hope that's true :(
hopefully i'll get to go to dartmouth :(

most of the reason the interview went badly in your view was probably because you were so nervous about it or caught up in trying to make a good impression rather than in being yourself. but ya, the interview doesnt play that huge a role in the admissions process.

I am sincerely hoping that the interview does play a vital role in admission process. But why would you say otherwise?

Anyway, I had my interview a week ago and went extremely well. We talked for more than an hour (close to 2hrs) and it didn't feel like an interview at all. It was more of a dialogue/discussion rather than a formal question and answer session. I must say that it was the most memorable part of my application process to any school thus far and I've got my fingers crossed while I wait for the final answer. I hope it doesn't take longer than a month now!

The interviews are useless...

more or less useless than essays, Xanatos?

interviews are mainly used nowadays for pr purposes. basically, they cant disqualify a top candidate (unless they murder the interviewer) and they can't put a low applicant in the running... what they can do is knock a middling applicant either way. so hopefully you're at the top.

while to best of interviews may not get you in , a bad interview (not counting nervousness) may keep you out as it may uncover things such as fit, how much you really know about the school which you are applying to (but the interview will never be the deciding factor gerarding admittance).

They're both a pretty equal waste of time...I would say that an essay potentially has more of a chance of making an impact, as it's read directly by an interviewer, instead of some guy who will write up a one paragraph summary about you that no one will read or care about.

The thing i learned about interveiws is to bring stuff for show and tell. For instance, i brought my first team all-state thing as well as the medal i received for winning the meet of champions in the polevault. To my yale interveiwer i gave some original artwork that i made in the independant study graphic design class which i created and managed to get funding for. Also i brought some books about the cherokee nation and a family tree which i used to show my D interviewer stuff about my family history (for instance the exact amount the government payed some of my direct ancestors for their land and posessions before they embarked on the trail of tears). Whenever there was a slightl lull in conversation i moved onto the next item to talk about. :) but i'm sure many of you did something similar

I really disagree about the essays being a waste of time. The interview can't help you that much, but the essay definitely can. Especially at Dartmouth, where personality plays a larger role in the admissions process than at some schools.

Hey Alex, what are you talking about? Essays make or break the app! It's the one real place where the applicant can say something UNIQUE. As for the interview, I don't know what I would say about that... I didn't have one, and I got in...?

Oh please...there are 12,500 applicants, how many essays do you think the admissions officers are going to remember?

esp. if they're all like "I went to Europe and it really changed my perception of people"

Oh yeah and I didn't have an interview either...
