Just found Loyola Marymount, good idea to apply?

Basically I thought I had narrowed down my entire list of colleges. Mine are pretty eclectic, but UCLA and Pepperdine are among them, as well as NYU and Syracuse. I live in Washington so I have safeties like Western, Gonzaga, etc.

I’m an aspiring English undergrad, possibly theater, therefore most of the schools I applied to are very humanities focused.

I thought I was done a week ago, but I recently read up on LMU and have started debating whether this might actually be a noteworthy option. I heard they have a good English program, and obviously located in LA puts them in a prime theater area.

It’s also fairly less difficult to get into then Pepperdine and UCLA. The deadline is in 3 days, but I’d only have to write their essay.

Thoughts on applying? Ultimately I have to decide myself just curious if anyone has advice. I’d really like LMU as a backup, stats wise I have a 3.8 UW GPA, not terrible but not exceptional for UCLA obviously.

And yes, I’m a little disappointed I didn’t find this school sooner, obviously.

The deadline is tomorrow. Give it a shot. You don’t have to decide where you want to go until April. The more universities you apply to, the more options you’ll have.

Go ahead and apply. However, LMU doesnt’ give great aid, so have your parents said how much they’ll pay?

In another thread, you were asked if cost were a factor, and your answer was that you’re more focused on your education. That doesn’t pay the bills. Will your parents pay for Gonzaga, or those costly OOS publics that you’ve applied to?

You can only borrow $5,500…so if your parents won’t pay, you can’t either.

Your choices are eclectic. I’m sure you are aware that Pepperdine has a large religion focus.

Apply to LMU. It is a fine school, and they offer some good merit scholarships.

You mentioned a few instate schools. I hope you are also applying to the University of Washington, which has an excellent English department (and Honors Program). http://college.usatoday.com/2015/02/05/the-best-u-s-colleges-for-a-major-in-english/

http://depts.washington.edu/uwhonors/apply/freshman/faq/ (English is one if the top majors).

Good luck!

I would highly encourage applying to LMU its a beautiful campus in a great location. I visited and was very impressed by it. They seemed to have good programs for what you want

Thanks for all the helpful advice. I think I will apply.

Yes, while the religious focus of Pepperdine and LMU aren’t huge draws for me, they aren’t necessarily detractors.
However, I would have to visit before deciding either one of them.

However, I wasn’t aware of LMU’s price tag.

Mom2collegekids, that’s all they offer for aid? You’re right about my parents worrying about costs, I shouldn’t pretend it’s not a factor, it is. They do want the best education for me though.

This site http://www.collegefactual.com/colleges/loyola-marymount-university/paying-for-college/#
shows that even with average aid, you can narrow down the expenses by quite a lot.

LMU actually gives pretty good scholarships, and your stats are good. You should at least try to see what they give to you. It was on top of my D’s list, but she ultimately decided against it because she doesn’t want to live in LA. But you do, so it’s perfect for you. The campus is great, the education is great, and if you are not terribly religious, then it really doesn’t matter. We have a friend who is Jewish who goes to that school and doesn’t bother her a bit.

You should apply, but I agree it’s an expensive school. Pepperdine isn’t cheap either, although your stats are high.

OK, that’s more reassuring. Thanks as well!

NO, that’s not what I meant?

Did you run the NPC on LMU’s website? Have your parents do so and then discuss the results.

LMU is a beautiful school. Depending on your parents finances, they do give some aid if you have good stats.
If you are Catholic, they do have additional private scholarships to aid with tuition and funding.

Pepperdine is like church camp and has a lot of rules. LMU is chill about the religious aspect. They do not compare in this regard.

@UWfromCA @mom2collegekids @3mamagirls can you tell me more about their merit aid opportunities? I have a 30 act, 4.3 weighted/ 3.9 unweighted gpa at a top public school, and am in the top 10% of my class. I’m trying to figure out my chances of merit aid.
