I just got a call from SAIC today regarding my admissions. Not only was I admitted, but was also offered 44k dollars in initial scholarship money from them over a period of four years. This is before FAFSA and other aid becomes involved. How good is this in relation to you guys? Is this good? Bad? Normal? I wish they had called earlier in the year because I am deferring (taking a gap year) to work and intern in Chicago. The catch, however, is that if I officially defer for a year, I will lose all of that scholarship money and will have to reapply for it next year, despite already being "accepted."

Thoughts? Thanks!

Oh, and here are a couple of links to my work:

I think it would be unwise to defer. Why are you interning so early in your college education? I think interning is important, but I think it’s something much better to do junior/senior year of college, and to intern somewhere you could see yourself working. My college art department has us intern winter of our senior year, and many people get job offers before they graduate, which lands them a job right after graduation.

The college might not offer you as much next year, because you’ll already be in Chicago. Part of the reason they’re offering you so much is because you’ve been accepted to other places, but once they find out that you’re already in Chicago interning/working, they might take that as a sign that you’re most likely going to their school. Also, your portfolio is really great, but someone next year might come through with something even better and might get that money instead.

You are the genius photo boy aren’t you?
that is just wrong they are baiting you with mere 11K for a year out of what? 48K or something?
Do you have a place to stay in Chicago? then it could be cheaper but still…
didn’t you do pre college at SAIC?
why didn’t they offer big buck already when you were there?
I am not stalker or anything (well maybe a bit)
Read up squee thread if you have nothing better to do.
11K / year is so-so. not bad but not great. Some kids gotten 20 K plus but they are not photo, maybe that has something to do with it.
I had impression your work is not so SAIC-sh and already working and all, I thought you aren’gonna go to art school.
what happened and why now?
I really loved the self portrait with pencil, green. I am not photo people, just like looking at something so well articulated and plain gorgeous.
My kid does music and some art here there, I guess, what you do is what he meant to be doing, so naturally I got attached to your music festival images and so on.
( Ok, I admit, I am a stalker, be careful)

I didnt think SAIC was especially notorious for giving out $$, but I could be wrong. I think the total they offered you is fairly average. They’ll be on my list of application schools, but I wont start that until next year.

I love the portfolio. Did any of the other schools offer awards?

I am pretty set on SAIC. my dad is letting me stay in his vacant apartment where he keeps all his antiques. So housing is covered. That would cut down my cost dramatically. I want to take a gap year because I honestly do not know what to do with my life. I plan on interning this fall + working, then traveling around Europe next spring ( and maybe hitchhike to Chernobyl on the side ) . I think a gap year will help improve my portfolio dramatically.

I did not attend a pre college. I simply could not afford it. I did go to the studio preview workshop, which was pretty amazing!

Photography is definitely my thing! I’m experimenting with
video right now (working on two music videos)

If you want a more complete profile of me, my resume is on thrhomepage of my site.

Sorry for the unorganized response; typing on iPhones suck!

Thanks again everyone and wish me luck today as I have my Chigago Tribune/Red Eye internship interview today!

Nooooo
you are supposed to go to U Chicago or Northwestern, at least Knox. another brain kid lost in the artschool depth…
fine, do whatever you want.
I saw an exhibition at Met while ago, the guy took photos of Chernobyl after. I don’t know the name of the guy but it was stunning. big prints, weird colors. I am sure you know whatever it called.

Good luck with your interview. If you’ll be working at the Tribune building, you’ll be in the best part of the city! Was hoping my D would like SAIC (I’m from Chicago), but it wasn’t a good fit for her. Oh well, maybe she’ll go there for a MFA.

Kid…you may not even need school. I’m not saying this to swell your head. Everyone has places to grow and develop. But if you are so on the go already, something might happen on it’s own. Good work.

hear hear!
Wesleyan Yale Brown U Chicago Reed
hope your family is decently poor, or you have to lower the tier to Knox Oberlin
Deep Springs! yes!! NO! don’t come, I don’t want lower my kid’s chance any more than he is at.

My perspective has changed since the last time I sought help on CC. To say that I am “supposed” to go somewhere is frankly a little ridiculous now that I think of it. I had the same mindset back in 2008: I have to get this ACT score, I have to join these clubs, etc. Then I realized that I was doing what everyone else was doing - preparing myself to join the “rat race” of college, rushing to complete more school, and inevitably, getting that drab office job.

The interview went GREAT. The editor loves my work and my aesthetic (He could connect my work to The Ryan McGinley’s/VICE). Hopefully, I’ll be hearing back from him later this week.

I’ve thought about just skipping school all together, which is why I’m taking a year off to work, intern, and explore the world around me. At this point, given my relative lack of success, I’m still planning on going to college.

Don’t get me wrong, I love more than just photography. Philosophy, Journalism, and International Studies (I spent a semester in Egypt studying Arabic through the State Dept) are still very, very important to me.

I don’t see going to Knox or Oberlin as “lowering the tier.” Both are great schools. My family is so so. My Dad is much more well-off than my mom. They are separated.

yep that’s the guy. thanks.
the show was about after Katrina, I must have seen his book there, or might have had Chernobyl prints as well. It was something, the scale of the destruction. you can smell dust and musty air. can feel how paint tips crumble from wall by just looking at it.
