Just Got Accepted(Visited Today)

I just got accepted to UCF for Fall 2012

Today I went on campus and turned in my residence card and I think they must have accepted me on the spot

I toured the campus, and it is better than in pictures

Everything about it is gorgeous. Gym is amazing. I went into a friends Lake Claire Apartment and they are great. Right next to Frat Row, close to classes, and right next to Bright House/UCF Arena. Kinda far from the gym but w/e

I think that if I choose to go there (which I think I will) I'll need to get a bike since the campus is really big.

BTW, my stats were

2030 SAT
4.7 Weighted GPA

lol i look at like this, it’s good jog to the gym as a warmup

No one really bikes at UCF. Everyone either walks or skates. I went for an all day national merit tour and saw 1 person biking. The tour guy said that it doesn’t take more than 10-15 minutes to get to anywhere on campus walking.

Congratulations! I know you were having some issues with the whole residence situation-I’m glad it worked out. I’m just looking for any excuse to stay up late. I just saw paranormal activity 3. Word to the wise? Don’t see. I just lost sleep for about a week.

Congrats! I got my acceptance this past Thursday

Congrats on your acceptance!

And ProblemOfChoice, actually, there are a lot of bikers at UCF, not sure why you didn’t see as many. It’s a good idea to bring a bike since walking can get really tiring!

I went to UCF on a college tour. Their gym is AMAZINGG

Dolphin:

You have good stats. Weren’t you interested in University of Florida?. If not, why not? The reason I am asking is that my son is applying to UF and FSU, but not UCF. You almost seem a bit overqualified for UCF. If you don’t mind, could you share your decision making on this question with me? Thanks.

By the way, you forgot to mention that Orlando is a pretty good town besides. Lots of stuff to do.

Over qualified for UCF? Yes, he has great stats, but to say he’s over qualified for a great school? Personally, I do not get this whole, “University of Florida” as being the top dog. I’m out of state, but even here in Illinois, people much prefer UCF over University of Florida. Just because someone has goods stats doesn’t neccessarily mean that they have to go after the most ‘competitive’ school in the area. University of Central Florida is a simply great school, and is really begginning to catch up to University of Florida, and Florida State University. Perhaps he just likes UCF more then UF? Believe it or not, I don’t think UF is really the best college, when you look at the all around experiance. That’s just my thought, though.

Florida dad, Im 4.0+weighted and 1900+sat but chose UCF over FSU/UF for a couple of reasons.

1.Opportunity- I’m Pre-med so I looked for the best school offering internships and research, being in a large city UCF offered this.
2.Exclusivity- Why play into the degree machine game that colleges are nowadays…at UCF higher stat people like dolphin and I could be a part of the Honors college which many students that aren’t offered at UF. They just become a regular number to the school (not to mention UCF’s Honors college is more selective… at UF there is lateral admission for those who do well first semester that didn’t have the right stats, at UCF only the best of the best get in)
3. Fun- I never bought into the whole gator nation(which doesn’t mean squat to any academic facility of reputation), so going to a school where unless your in a frat or a football fanatic…life is boring.
4. $ - Why pay more for the same degree from a big state university… on paper for grad schools/ med school they just look at your scores and gpa and activities, not school. UCF offered me over 10 grand up front!

Sifantic, what do you mean you got 10 grand up front? Pegasus scholarship?

Well, my decision is not final. Im applying to UF but not FSU so things could change.

First of all, UCF has a bad rep among some people about being a bad school, but I dont agree with that at all. UCF’s mean SAT of last year’s class is a 1250. Mine was a 1320 so its a little higher. I believe this number is higher than FSU’s and its pretty close to UF.

My main reason for choosing UCF is that I just love the place and the opportunities it offers. To me, it offers the best of both worlds. Its in a big city like Orlando with all the big city things to do as well as all of the internship opportunities that you can imagine, but also when you visit, you realize that UCF is actually its own town inside Orlando. Its completely detached from everything else so its a college town inside a city.

Another reason for choosing UCF is that even though they messed up with my residency card, when I talked to the admissions guy on Saturday, I felt wanted. And as I walked around campus talking to random people that we would meet on the way, I felt wanted as well. I also like the whole vibe of the campus. You don’t realize how beautiful it is until you visit. And its also perfectly planned so everything is where it should be.

I also like how its only around 3 hours from South Florida, so I can be away from home, without being too far away (UF is like 5 hours and FSU about 7). Its also only 30 minutes away from the beach so that’s always a plus.

I also feel like I would get bored at a regular college town after awhile and also prefer to build my own path and watch the University grow rather than just follow the same path as everyone else and go the UF and FSU route. I am fairly certain that UCF will surpass FSU in the future.

And since I’m Pre-Med, I like UCF’s Pre-Med program with the new medical school better than FSU’s

FloridaDad, this may come as a shock to you, but there are a ton of students that turns down UF/FSU for UCF. One of my friends even turned down UF when they offered her more money than UCF. The pictures and videos doesn’t even do any justice for UCF at all. When I applied to UCF 2 years ago, my Parents would force me to apply to UF, but I didn’t at all because I knew that even if I got accepted, I wouldn’t attend. Acceptance weren’t as tough back then, but I was still treading on the borderline for both schools, and my heart was only at UCF. Things seemed to be very quick paced around here, but once you attend the school, you’ll realize how chill it is. And trust me when I say this- the professors at UCF are truly amazing. Every single professor that I’ve had, has gone out of their way to help students, even one to one help, no matter how large the number of students in the class was. Sometimes I wonder why people say that UCF stands for ‘U Cant Finish’ when help is offered literally EVERYWHERE for your classes. Not only that, everyone around here seems to be super nice! Yes, I know it sounds like rainbows and butterflies, but honestly, it really is!

P.S. Just to clear things up, I’m not belittling any schools. I think UNF/UCF/UF/FSU/USF etc… are all great schools in their own way. I truly think one needs to do a campus visit and weigh in other factors to see which fits them the most. A lot of the times, it’s really not all about rankings. I think a lot of us forget that sometimes.

Hey floridadad55!

Yeah I love UF, don’t get me wrong… It’ll be a difficult decision for me to choose between honors programs if I get accepted to both… My transcripts that were sent stated I had a 2050 superscored SAT, but my new score (and I’ll be pressing submit on my UF app in the next few days) is 2110. I have a 31 ACT, and 3.9 UW/5.0 W GPA, ranked 3/650+.

I know someone who rejected HARVARD to go to UCF. She preferred the opportunities that downtown Orlando offered and I’ll bet UCF in general. It does seem outrageous… at first… but I too am warming up to UCF.

UCF’s scholarship offers are really attractive. If UCF offers me Provost which is $20,000 over the course of 4 years and guaranteed admission to Honors, I’ll probably be guaranteed to go UCF. Now I’m not sure about my chances as they only accept about 80 kids, or top 10% of the incoming class and I’m no national merit.

The difference b/w UF reg and UF honors is very little according to what I have heard. UF honors is only 2 years. At UCF, the honors program is 4 years and you’re supposedly treated like “royalty.” I know of UF Honors kids who are still treated like a number… However, UF does have well-established programs and a great reputation… But on the other hand, there is a lot of competition for opportunities. UCF has numerous partnerships with big name as well as local businesses. When you’re applying for a job, doesn’t experience trump prestige?

I personally did not have the great vibe I got from UF when I visited UCF. Which is hilarious because I’m very, very familiar with the UCF area. However, UCF isn’t a bad choice. They are quite different in I don’t know the word… atmosphere? UF is more traditional college town while UCF is urban…

Also it is just undergrad… Everyone is needing their bachelor’s so unless you are in very competitive fields where undergrad education prestige does matter… the difference between both is minimal. I personally am looking at Engineering and Accounting. Very likely computer engineering because UCF is renowned for it’s computer/tech programs. After all, UCF was originally FL Technological University, supposed to prepare workers for the big technical companies like NASA, etc. There have been UCF grads who go on to Ivies, Harvard for example even for medicine. As long as you make the best of it… and if undergrad prestige doesn’t matter, where you get your bachelor’s also doesn’t really matter.

Hehe! Sorry for my novel! I didn’t realize it was that long. xD I’m so excited to read floridadad’s response though! Wonder what he thinks…

A bit late to to this thread, but my two cents, Floridadad…

S1 was between Ga Tech and UF and went UF for engineering. Great program and, quite honestly, his close friends were going and that tipped the scales.

S2 is not a fan of either FSU or UF. Nothing in either city and no big fan of Gator/Nole schtick, even though he plays two varsity sports. Hates the UF campus. 24 hour Taco Bell and his brother are the only bright points in his book.

Personally, I think the UF campus looks like the Bronx meets Deliverance. FSU, though nicer, is still in Podunk, so I’m w S2 on that.

UCF, although large, has a very nice campus, good programs, and better location for internships. The state schools will change in rankings many times over, othervthan law school. That said, each kid has to find their own niche.

D1 turned down UF, UCF, FSU and 8 northeast schools to attend UNF. Happy and working now in NY for major sports team. It’s what they make of it.

S2… probably headed to Boston area school of 2000.

Scheduled to visit UCF with my daughter for the University President’s Dinner. UCF gives National Merit Finalists $68,000 in-state and $144,000 out-of-state, plus guaranteed admission in its Honors College and in its LEAD Scholars Program; four years of free housing; and a laptop. UF and FSU don’t even come close to providing that kind of package.

I’m a Die Hard Gator Fan Go Gator Nation as well visited UF because my older brother had to get his wisdom teeth taken out and UF as well as University of Miami have very good Medical Programs…I am a Criminal Justice Major so I chose UCF even though I was denied by both UCF and UF my freshman year because my SAT and ACT scores were crap but in choosing a school it all comes down to your overall experience and what you plan to gain from the school as well as what great programs are offered. In all actuality a person can never be over qualified for something if it is something that they love than by all means follow your heart because I know many of students who go where their parents want them to go and become miserable or homesick because they don’t get to enjoy things for themselves because they are living out their parents dreams…yeah parents want to see their kids attend the best schools but as college students the only way they are going to be happy is if they experience life for themselves and make their own decisions and that is one thing parents need to realize the more you force your kid to pursue something they aren’t going to be happy in the end it will always be what if I had went the other direction but Florida in general has got some good schools and some schools are becoming more prestigious than the ones that have been that way for years like UCF it is a growing school with opportunities and a great tourist town so you will have good and bad anywhere you go you just have to make the best of it… Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in and it may or may not matter to anyone but I just wanted to say that
