Just got my ACT score, chance me please

Not really I just need opinions desperately and want to know if I should add schools to my list and if I can get in these schools.

Chances at Duke, Cornell, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, Boston College, UNC, PSU?

I am apply to the schools above and Penn State honors. I realize a lot of these schools are a bit of a stretch, but I figure Penn State should be pretty sure since I live in Pennsylvania. I am also applying to Duke ED.

What are my chances at Duke (ED), Cornell, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, Boston College, UNC(out of state), PSU (in-state+Honors college)?

Forgot to mention my uncle went to Duke.

Low rank and the absence of leadership on your app is going to kill you at most of your reaches. Your ACT is very good, but there's just not much to back it up. A downward grade trend also looks pretty bad on a transcript. Make sure you fully explain any difficulties you had, it will be to your advantage to tell them everything you can! Go for some leadership positions this year if it isn't too late. Maybe start a club in something you are passionate about?

Many Ivys look at EC's, community service, and leadership more than scores.
With the surplus of applicants with 2100+, colleges look at the other things to determine who gets accepted/rejected.

Wrong ... anhtimmy ... They also look at essays ... essays are extremely important .. and don't start a club just to stuff your app ... college admissions will know especially if you do that in your senior year ... JUST BE YOURSELF!

Hi 09ddarr!

It's been a long time since I chanced someone, so I'll chance you right now. (I've chanced/evaluated ~200 people here on CC so far)

Your UW GPA of 3.7 is decent --- I wouldn't call it bad but it's also not outstanding either. The good news is that you challenged yourself with 7 APs --- and not that many people take AP Latin ... so that stands out on your transcript, and Latin is a very difficult and complex language (I know this based on personal experience). The number of APs is about average for the top schools you're applying to when compared to your competition. However, you noted a downward grade trend ... normally, that isn't a very good thing, but for you, this is a unique situation because you had surgery and fell behind in work. College admissions will understand your situation; just have your counselor explain it in her rec. Make sure that you do better this semester to show that you rebound from adversities ... colleges will be looking for improvement in your first semester grades now that you're done with surgery. For you, the drop in GPA isn't necessarily a death sentence. Your SAT of 2080 is good, and an 11 on the essay is impressive. Your ACT of 33 is also very good, and your test scores demonstrate that you're pretty even across the board ... you are well-rounded. Your ECs are on the weaker side because they have a bit too much emphasis on sports. You should have been even more well-rounded in HS by participating in volunteering clubs and/or academic clubs (Science Olympiad, Quiz Bowl) ... it adds more flavor to your app. I do like your Obama campaign, but serving a mere few weeks on it is pretty trivial. Just because you don't have any leadership positions doesn't mean you won't get into the tops. Don't let people bring you down when they say that ... anything is possible at the top schools and no one is gonna be "definitely rejected." People who tell you that are just trying to cut down their competition.

However, if you sincerely enjoy playing sports, do talk about it your EC essay. Reveal your passion for sports in your essay, and you should do fine.

Overall, you are a pretty good student who has been challenged especially at the end of your junior year. Make yourself stand out by improving your grades and writing a killer essay.

Chances:
Duke: Slight reach
Cornell: Slight reach
Vanderbilt: High match
Georgetown: High match
Boston College: Match
UNC OOS: Match
Penn State: Safety match

Good luck, and bring those grades up!
