Just got my financial aid offer

For those wondering I'm a transfer student.

Anyway, I followed all the steps to check how much I would be getting, but I'm a little confused at what I'm looking at here.

I see numbers everywhere and I don't really understand what they all mean.
Could anyone with experience with financial aid help?

Thanks

Can you post it?

[Here’s the picture](<a href=“http://i.imgur.com/kSqg61Y.jpg"]Here’s”>http://i.imgur.com/kSqg61Y.jpg)

The picture on the right is like if you continued scrolling down.

I understand the basics, like grants are money you don’t have to give back, loans are… well loans…

But the “Cond. Parent Loan Option-Apply” and “Conditional FWS Option”.
I get that it’s work study, but I don’t understand how it works. Since it says $766 (for Fall 2013) does that mean I can only work until I make $766? Or I get $766 if I accept work study then I get paid on top of that?

Also from experience how “good” are these numbers? I’ve never gotten financial aid, so I don’t know how much things cost overall for UC living I guess. (I think I said I was living off campus?)

When you do work study the government will pay a certain amount of your check and the employer will pay the rest. So say they were paying half of it & you were being payed 10$'s an hour, after making 1532$'s in total the government would stop paying for any income afterwards. The employer then wouldn’t get the benefits of having hired you. Also when filing income taxes you don’t have to put down the 766$'s because it was a grant.

This is my first year getting full fasfa also, but from what I’ve heard you should be pretty much set. School cost 14k (The conditional uni grant) and books and transportation another two to three thousand. If you don’t need to pay rent then it’s even better. When they’re deciding how much money to give you they look at everything; how much is school, books, housing, food, having fun and then decide how much to give you. My income was pretty much 0$ and they only have me 3k more so you almost got completely covered : )

FYI:
Pell grant- regular fafsa grant
Grant A/B/C- for having good grades and needing the money
subsidized loan- you don’t have to pay back till after school (my sister just enrolls into community college classes so she can put off paying these -.-)
unsubsidized- you have to pay back while in school
work study- you work to earn that money
uni grant- The blue & gold program which pays tuition
parent loan- your parent can take out a loan to help them pay for your college expenses

So did I not get an A/B/C Grant then? I see I have a Pell Grant and a University Grant.
Did I also not get Blue and Gold Grant then?

I’m going to need to pay rent since I’m moving there, if I decide to go.

Is there a way to see what the numbers would have been if I lived on campus? Because I believe I selected to live off campus, but now I’m not sure, what should I do?

I don’t think so, did you submit your application before March 2nd? Also did you ever get fasfa at your community college? I got Grant B my second yr at cc so that may be why you didn’t get it.

You did get the Blue & Gold grant it’s the 14k.

I’m really not sure about the last one, contact the transfer center there (I think it’s STARS) they are very helpful. I know when I went on one of the tours there the tour guide was originally not going to get FASFA and the head of the transfer center contacted them and let them know his situation. In the end he was completely covered.

Still the most you can get is 32k so you’d only be getting 3k more…which maybe from the grant a/b/c. You also don’t have the full pell grant which is about 1,100$ more, but I think that has more to do with your families income.

You either get the university grant (which is blue & gold) or you get the cal grant. If you do qualify for the cal grant, they will replace the university grant with the cal grant later on. I will be getting cal grant B but right now my award still says university grant. (It takes a little time for them to process the information I’m guessing.)

Also I want to correct something that epicremy said.

That’s technically not true. You have to report it as part of your income for your income tax and on the FAFSA, but for the FAFSA under a different section you report the income as earnings from need based programs.

This is why work study is good since the extra income doesn’t affect the amount of financial aid you can earn, but you are still required to report it.

A correction to epicremy:

Unsubsidized Loans - you do NOT have to pay back while a full-time student.

Interest accrues on unsubsidized loans while your in school, whereas subsidized loans do not since the government is paying the interest (while a full-time student). Unsub & sub Stafford loan payments are due 6 months after you graduate, drop below part-time, or withdraw.

Ohh Okay I should have said they don’t affect your FASFA, my bad.
Also I got both Grant A and Blue & Gold program, but B&G only gave me 5k instead of the full 14.

I see.
So in people’s experience how much am I going to have to end up paying while I have this financial aid?
I’m trying to gauge where I’m at without having to look at loans, I’m not saying I’m ever going to need one, but I need to know how much I’m covered.

I’ve never been in the UC system and all I hear is how expensive it all is, the money is a big deal I guess.

Thanks

Edit: Also what about scholarships? In the UC Application we were to indicate what scholarships we could receive if we fell under a certain category. How does that work?
