Just how important are the AP exam scores?

How closely do adcoms look at that?

I actually paid attention in class and learned and all that stuff,
but I'm really not sure if I'm ready for AP exams (taking 3)

I just wanted to know just in case I don't do well (i mean like a 3)

AP scores = college level work (theoretically)
Good AP scores = you'll do well in college
Doing well in college = Desirable
Desirable = conducive to an admission

Yeah I'm thinking the same way... I might risk a 3 on Spanish.... my teacher was awful. I think I won't take it =X

Adcoms don't even see your AP scores. Therefore, they cannot have any affect over your admission decision.

wait...
i saw on several college applications
that said list all your ap or ib courses and exam scores

All I had to do on my application was list the AP courses that I took. The only way they got the scores is if when I took the AP test I denoted that I wanted them sent to the school I am going to be attending.

I guess it depends on the school your applying to.

hmmm
i guess common app. doesn't ask you to list them.
but i believe colleges' individual apps. do...
alright...
thanks SO much anyway klf1120!

The common app doesn't ask you to list them. If you did really well, you can list them in "additional information" at the end.

Your high school transcript probably does not list them. check.

Individual schools sometimes have boxes for you to list them.
In this case, many people recommend listing only 4s and 5s.
Those are the scores necessary to receive college credit at most colleges.

Don't send the scores to the schools you're applying to. Wait until you enroll in one, and send them to that school only.

i see.. thank you so much.

My schools doesn't include the AP scores as well, but
I could've sworn I saw AP or IB score slot for Duke app. (not common app.)

So does this mean if I have not so good (4s or 5s) scores on the AP exams, I should use common app. and just not say anything?

First of all, PLAN to get 4s, at least. They are easier than you might think.
But if you do get all 3s, which is unlikely, you could either do the common app, or the individual school app and just not fill in those boxes. Chances are you will get mostly 4s and 5s if you're looking at a school as competitve as Duke, so you could put those in, and leave out the occassional 3.

thank you so much btw.
you guys are helping me out here a lot...
I'm under enormous pressure about the ap exams..

alright thanks for the advise...

I don't see how you can say 4s are fairly ez to get...

AHHHH soo much stress.

Now more with the finalist things for scholarships... ECs... elections...
GPAs... final exams... SATS... AHHHHHHH

The pressure can build up, I had 3 AP exams last year, just stay focused and take a break every day and do something completly unrealated. You would be suprised how it helps to get your mind off it for a bit.

Don't stress, I'm sure you'll do fine!

wow...
that's the nicest thing someone has ever said to me during this boooring and unproductive (parties...now I regret I why went...should've studied) spring break.

Thanks klf1120!!

what APs did you take?

I took AP world 3(yea.. i know..)

now
AP chem
AP US
AP Eng lang (not sure if I'll get good score especially since I'm an international student living here who got out of ESOL like 2 years ago... lol)

wowser, remember that your regular grades are much more important than your AP scores as far as college admissions goes. Taking the challenging classes and getting good grades in them is what counts. Good luck!

Last year I was a junior, so I took..

AP US History

AP English Language & Comp

AP Biology

None of them were too bad, except Biology. I'm not one that is into science in the first place, so I was kind of doomed to begin with. Life does go on though, I have no desire to be a science major.

This year I have..

AP English Lit & Comp

AP Calc AB

The worst part is the test days are back to back. What a bummer.

The most pressure comes from you. Remember that. If you go in with the mindset that you know the material and give your best effort and at the end you know that you did your best, that is all you can hope for. Don't beat yourself up about it. :)

thanks so much!
you're really boosting up my self-esteem lol

No problem. I've always found that having first hand advice, especially if you have never taken an AP exam is extremly helpful. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

is it ok to take like... godforbid... 6 APs senior year and apply and drop them after first semester (requirement in my school)?

I wouldn't recommend taking them just to look good on an application. Once your application is submitted, you have to tell the college your applying to of any changes in your schedule, so they would catch on. At least that's what I had to do. I wanted to drop an elective for an AP course and I had to contact the college and they had to okay it. Of course they did, because an AP outweighs an elective by a ton.

I'd say just take the ones that you plan the exam for. Don't waste your time on something that you have no intent on finishing.
