Just want an Idea of Spare Time in College..

Hi guys, I am currently a senior in high school and want to do a bunch of things in college but I want to know if I will have the time.

I want to know that in between classes, studying, part-time jobs, etc., how much free time do you have?

Of course I realize this question is very open ended and I won't get an accurate response for my prospective college.

So can you guys please post:

Where you go to school?
What is your major?
Courseload/how are your grades?
How much sleep do you get?
How many hours of free time do you get?
Any additional info/advice you would like to share:

Thank you for your help.

Where you go to school?
community college, transferring at the end of the semester.
What is your major?
Liberal Arts-History
Courseload/how are your grades?
Full courseload, as difficult as I could make it. 3.8 gpa
How much sleep do you get?
As much as I need. I sometimes skip eating if sleep feels more important,
How many hours of free time do you get?
Not as many as I’d like…but I have enough to do the things that are important to me.
Any additional info/advice you would like to share:
If you have good time management skills, you can handle a decent courseload. Remember that your first objective in going to college is learning. If your outside activities are interfering with that, you should cut back on them.

E.S.I.D. Every situation is Different

Where: UCCS

Major: Double Major anthropology/history

Courseload: Normally 18 credits however as of these past two semesters it has been 12 due to bad health.

Sleep: As much as i need, no more.

Free time: E.S.I.D, there were times that i had a bunch of free time and others when i had none.

Additional info:

Try to avoid history classes that go from 7:30pm - 10:30 pm, the only way you’ll live through those is with lots of caffine.

Manage your time.

DO not be afraid to ask for help, professors, TAs, and ceters are there for you after all.

Do not be afraid to report something to the RA if something in the Dorms happens.

Orginization is key.

Where do you go to school? Valparaiso University

What is your major? Music

Courseload/how are your grades? I’ve had anywhere from 13-19 credits, plus I’m in the honors program. I have about a 3.5

How much sleep do you get? 6-9 hours a night (though 9 would be a dream).

How many hours of free time do you get? I’d say about 2 hours a day

Any additional info/advice you would like to share:
Manage your time well
Don’t procrastinate (seriously)
Only do things that you have to (class) or love (not-class stuff) because you will actually want to do it.
Don’t sacrifice sleep for grades (goes into procrastination thing). You won’t be productive if you pull too many all-nighters. I know from witness and experience.
Have fun!

Where you go to school? Small private LAC.
What is your major? Communications/Media Studies
Courseload/how are your grades? 5 classes and so far all A’s this semester, according to my midterm report. Last sem I had 5 classes too and got a 3.7 average.
How much sleep do you get? 6-8 hours generally.
How many hours of free time do you get? Umm… quite a lot! But I scheduled my classes a certain way.
Any additional info/advice you would like to share:
What I did was schedule most of my classes on Tues & Thurs, so that day is basically my “busy” day where I don’t have work. My classes basically run from 10am-6pm and I get 20 min. break inbetween, where I snack and stuff.
My Mon/Wed/Thurs classes run from 1030-12pm so basically after this, I usually work for about 4-6 hours, depending on my schedule.

So, all in all, I make my schedules everyday from 10ish-6pmish, whether it’s classes or work. After 6PM I have free time to go to the gym, homework, relax and eat dinner, and clubs (most of my club meetings are held at night anyway… the ones that are held in the middle of the day I unfortunately have to sacrifice).

Tips: Homeworking/Studying at a library helps a lot! The atmosphere is quiet and studious making you a productive student… usually. And also, going to the gym is a GREAT stress reliever. It’s a great way to use your freetime to listen to music and just escape for an hour or so whenever you can - and it’s wonderful for your health! It just has tooooo many benefits and I find it to be a very good addition to my life haha.

And lastly, sleep is seriously important. I’ve realized that by sacrificing sleep to do homework, it makes you even less productive.

Where do you go to school? Don’t feel like saying but I go to a well-known, private research university in California

Major: Biology with Spanish minor

Courseload: I’m currently taking 17 units: four 4-unit courses (general biology w/ lab, general chemistry w/ lab, psychology/statistics, and advanced Spanish) and a 1-unit neurobiology/anatomy colloquium. My first semester grades were pretty bad - I got all B’s and it was a huge wake up call, but I’ve gotten off to a great start in all my classes so things are looking up.

Sleep: I get about 6-7 hours of sleep on weekdays and then on weekends I just get up whenever my eyes open, which usually constitutes 10 hours.

Hours of Free time: I actually have quite a few hours of free time, because the things I’m involved in on campus either a) have no meetings and require me to just write articles, like the newspaper or b) have 1-hour weekly meetings or things like that. Besides class, office hours, other things, I have a lot of free time.

Any additional info/tips: As hard as it might be, DON’T procrastinate. Even people who take a reasonably heavy courseload and are involved with a lot of things have a good amount of free time, simply because it’s college. When you do have free time, motivate yourself to get your work done ahead of time and do whatever you need to do (go to the library, shut yourself away from distractions) to get work done. Free time is everyone’s biggest enemy in college and it’s pretty much why I didn’t do well last semester.

Where you go to school?
A small Catholic university in Ohio.

What is your major?
Environmental Biology

Courseload/how are your grades?
I’m taking 18 hours right now of all math and science, which was really a terrible idea. The only classes i have consistent work for are Physics II and Calc II where I have frequent quizzes and assigned homework. My other classes just require showing up for class and/or reading. It’s only bad during weeks when I have 4+ exams.

How much sleep do you get?
depends. normal weeks, 8 hours a night. exam weeks, between 4-6 hours per night plus a few glorious naps.

How many hours of free time do you get?
Again, it depends. My weekends aren’t too full with schoolwork and I only have 2 or 3 papers (although they are science papers) to write this semester. Im in class or working for 4 - 6 hours per day and I usually use the rest of the day to study, review my notes or go to office hours.

Any additional info/advice you would like to share:
Work. Hard.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Professors are professors because they love their subject and know a lot about it. When someone expresses interest in what they are teaching, it’s a great feeling.
When someone else asks for help, help them. To the best of your abilities. If you can’t coherently explain something to another person, you don’t know it. Teaching others is a great way to study.
Don’t leave things until last minute. College isn’t like high school, where a teacher might notice that you’re falling behind and ask you to stay after class. You need to motivate yourself. Failing a class is one thing, failing an entire semester is another. Colleges will put you on AP (academic probation) and if you don’t get your stuff together, you’ll be kicked out. That’s that. I’ve seen this happen to people and it is NOT something that you want to have to go through.

Where you go to school? Community College
What is your major? Business
Courseload/how are your grades? 15 Units; 3.8 Gpa; Also work 15 hours a week
How much sleep do you get? 5-9 Hours – I usually get a full nights sleep every other day and stay up to finish homework and stuff on the opposite days
How many hours of free time do you get? – Not sure on exact hours but I have a pretty good social life and time to do other things though I wish I had more

Any additional info/advice you would like to share:
Your free time will really depend on the course load that you take and your ability to manage your time wisely. I’m a chronic procrastinator and end up staying up late to finish things… I have 100 math problems and a five page rough draft due tomorrow… Haven’t started either and its 10…

My classes are similar to Lullabies except that I go Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and then work Monday, Friday and half day Thursday. I like this set up because it pretty much frees up my weekends and gives me a span of 4 days to work on homework and projects for my classes before the next week starts. I’m not really involved on campus cause it just community college I guess but I still workout almost everyday and last semester I took 19 units and still maintained a 3.8 GPA and the same work schedule.

It helps to plan out what classes you’ll take which semester so that you don’t end up with fairly easy classes one semester and then really hard, involved classes the next. Its better to even it out…

Good luck to you! I’m sure you’ll be fine :)

Where you go to school? UVA
What is your major? Pre-Comm – Accounting
Courseload/how are your grades? 17 credits – A average
How much sleep do you get? lol sleep… 2:30am to 8am but I take naps… sometimes
How many hours of free time do you get? I feel you can always make time for free time but taking time to not study or work on an assignment can come back and hurt you in the long run. But I devote 3-5 hours a day to not studying.
Any additional info/advice you would like to share:

Enjoy High School, college is hard and at times very depressing.

bigshot - with that sleep answer you’ll fit in just fine in Comm. ;)

State school In New England
Sociology Major
17-20 credits
3.7+ gpa in honors college
Sleep 7-10hrs a night ( I could never function less so I prioritize my time well to make this possible)
Just balance your time and you will have all the time you need
I finish classes by 1 and have meetings and other obligations. If I would have to guess I have 1 to 4hrs of nothing time a day. Mostly 2. 4 is rare.

Where you go to school? UMD College Park
What is your major? Information Systems and Supply Chain Management
Courseload/how are your grades? 3.7 right now, starting the real upper level biz courses this semester. Doing fine so far.
How much sleep do you get? 6-8hrs a day, depends.
How many hours of free time do you get? A lot. It’s not necessarily “free” but it’s unstructured. I’ll be in class for a total of 4.5 hours today. Monday and Wednesday is even shorter.
Any additional info/advice you would like to share: Just learn how to manage your priorities properly. You do get a lot of free time in college but if you spend it all just being unproductive then you’re gonna get bad grades. Do some homework, take a break, do some more, take a break… or do it all in one streak and then take the rest of the day to chill. I think it’s very manageable.

Where you go to school? Michigan State University
What is your major? International Relations / Economics
Courseload/how are your grades? taking the minimum - 12 credits (last semester senior year). 3.4 GPA in honors college
How much sleep do you get? probably 5-6 hours on average.
How many hours of free time do you get? I have 2 jobs working 30+ hours/week total. Homework on average takes me probably 10 hours a week (on a week where I don’t have an exam or major paper due). In my free time, I’m a vp of a student org, apply for real people jobs, attend lots of basketball/football games, and party or hang out with friends. Although busy I always find time to do social things on the weekends- keeps me sane.
Any additional info/advice you would like to share: Free time is a relative concept. If you manage your time well, you will have more free time in college than in high school. But it also depends on your responsibilities - the coursework is definitely harder in college, but you get to make your own schedule. If you have a job (or two) and are involved in extracurriculars your schedule tends to be a lot more hectic and sleep becomes less of a priority. If you care about having a social life, cost/benefit analysis. Sometimes studying that extra hour isn’t worth missing out on some good times with your friends. Other times you have to be willing to make those sacrifices to get good grades/get the career you want.

Where you go to school? Michigan State

What is your major? Zoology: Animal Behavior/Neurobiology

Courseload/how are your grades? 12-13 credits, just full time, recently switched from a major I sucked at to this the average would be about a 3.5

How much sleep do you get? 8 hours

How many hours of free time do you get? Generally I have 2 to 3 spare hours after I factor in studying, cleaning, cooking, work, reading, and other homework. It really depends on the day though, sometimes I have more and sometimes I have less. I am in a club which does eat up some of my time but you could argue it is free time.

Where you go to school? Vanderbilt
What is your major? Political Science, Spanish, and Psychology
Courseload/how are your grades? 3.7 GPA, typically take 15 hours a semester
How much sleep do you get? 8ish hours a night
How many hours of free time do you get? plenty
Any additional info/advice you would like to share… Just to illustrate the amount of free time I have, look at my baking blog. widbake.blogspot.com . My roommate and I love baking and find plenty of time to do so and keep up with this blog!

Illinois Wesleyan University
double degree- BM in Piano Performance & BA in History, minor instruments = clarinet & organ
3.5ish
4-7 hours usually but I take naps sometimes
most time outside of class is either practicing, studying, concerts, or some time with friends but not a lot of time…free time doesn’t really exist for music majors that much
