Hi. I'm US dual citizen living in Europe. My parent are not US citizens. I know that the date when FAFSA is available to fill out for 2014/2015 academic year is 1st January 2014. Do I need to request any password or PIN for FAFSA before 1st January? I really want to complete FAFSA on 1st or 2nd January so basically is there anything I need to do before that date? Should I convert my parents income and other data into $? If I'm eligible for Pell Grants and work study will I get this automatically from school when accepted?

What about CSS profile? Can my parents submit it before year 2014 even though I'm applying to colleges for fall 2014? Again, should we convert our currency into $?

Yes, one of your parents and you should get the PIN now.
Yes to both questions.
Yes to both questions. You should estimate your parents’ incomes in 2013.

You can apply for a PIN now. One of your parents will also need a PIN. Apply for that as well. If you are eligible for the Pell Grant, you will get this in your financial aid package from your colleges. Pell is an entitlement. Your EFC per FAFSA would need to be less than $5000 to be eligible for part of the Pell. Work Study is NOT an entitlement. Some students receive it and others do not.

Re: converting to U.S. dollars, yes…you report the FAFSA info in U.S. dollars.

re: the Profile…I don’t see any advantage to doing it now over doing it at the same time as your FAFSA. If you do these January 1, or close to it, you will have all the info from the 2013 tax year.

Thank you guys!

How can I and my parent apply for PIN now?

I’m really looking forward to work and study during the academic year. Is there something I can do to improve my chances of getting decent amount of Work Study?

I had a summer job in the US (fast-food restaurant) during 2013 vacations. Tax was automatically deducted from my money earned. As I said, I live in Europe. Do I have to request any forms from IRS that will be required for FASFA or CSS profile or should I check in my financial information that I will not file any tax returns?

Go to fafsa.gov and click the PIN link at the top.

Work study will be based on your fafsa efc and the availability of work study at the school. All you can do is meet the deadlines of your schools for finaid. Earlier is better. You can file fafsa in early January with estimates for income and actual asset info, then update the income information when 2013 is finalized.

Don’t you want to get a refund of the tax withheld from your job? You should file a return to do so.

Yes, you may be selected for fafsa verification but if you file a return, you can use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool on the fafsa site which should satisfy the verification.

For profile schools you will have to wait to see what other info each school may require. Just be sure to meet all deadlines posted on the school’s websites.

You should update your address with the fast-food restaurant, so that they could mail you the form W2 (which you need to file the US tax returns).

While applying for the summer job I provided my uncle’s US address as mine because I was staying at his home at that time. Is that mean they will mail this W2 form to my uncle? Again, am I required to file this tax return form if the tax was automatically taken from my earnings? Can I basically look into history on my bank account and put this data into FAFSA?

Depending on how much you earned, you may get a refund. Filing your tax forms is about the reconciliation- in short, what you owe them, if anything, and what they may owe you back. It’s worth the small effort to file. If that’s your only taxable income, you can use a simplified form. Google about who must file and it will take you to irs.gov.

The forms sent to your uncle’s address will tell you the total earned, total taxes taken out and anything else that may apply. At certain income levels, it’s a requirement to file.

You can pull up the CSS Profile worksheet now- some of what it asks for may need some time to figure- and some thinking time for you to be comfortable with your answers.
