This Kadya is here to answer any question you may have about UCI, or any aspect of UCI as well, kind of like a magical genie or a magic 8 ball, without the lamp rubbing or shaking. :)

I already know about the English placement. Now why is it required to take the Chem, Spanish and Calculus testing? I know that the testing will place you to the right classes. Why Calculus if your major is Nursing Science? My daughter is currently taking AP Calc, Spanish 4 AP, Chemistry Honors in Junior year.

Do I need to take the honors chem placement if im in CHP?

urkulmum:

If she passes the AP calc Test, depending on which test she takes, either BC or AB, she will b able to pass right out calc 2A, and possible 2B. I didnt take a single placement test so far other than writing. There will be no need to take a spanish placement test, because she will be done with her requirements for a foreign language by completing three years in high school with a B or better in the last two quarters of her last year of spanish. You will need the chem placement test if she doesn't take AP Chem. I took AP chem and was able to pass out of chem 1A and the entire placement test situation and go right into 1B. The chem placement test merely makes sure that she is ready for the chem class she will take. Make sure that you check what classes that she must take for her major, because she may not have to take certain classes or be able to substitute certain other classes for others. The 4 year academic planner for her major will be able to tell you what classes she will have to take.

If I've taken English 1A, 1B, Anthropology, and Psychology at a local CC during my past summers, will I receive units for it? Are those classes considered breadth classes at UCI? Do I just ask my CC to send an official transcript to UCI?

The UCI catalogue states that:

H2A-B-C Honors General Chemistry (4-4-4) F, W, S. Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Covers the same material as Chemistry 1A-B-C but in greater depth. Additional topics included as time permits. Corequisite: concurrent enrollment in the corresponding quarter of Chemistry H2LA-LB-LC. Prerequisite for H2A: membership in the Campuswide Honors Program, or a score of 4 or 5 on the Chemistry Advanced Placement Examination, or a score of 700 or better on the SAT II in Chemistry, or a qualifying score on the UCI Chemistry Placement Examination, or consent of instructor. Prerequisite for H2B-H2C: grade of B or better in preceding course in series. Chemistry H2A-B-C satisfies the same requirements and prerequisites as Chemistry 1A-B-C; corresponding segments may not both be taken for credit.

i am transfer student from korea, i wonder how difficult english placement exam may be for someone whose first language is not english.

^_^ Kamsahamnida!!!

And alsos, I get into higher UCs, but after watching many television shows about Orange County and touring area a few times I decide Northern California is very dry and ugly and I decide not on Berkeley. Eastern states too cold. I like sun. After going to Daewon Foreign Language High School which is high rank in Korea, I don't know if this good decision?

berkeley is a top ranked, nationally recognized instutitution.

having said that, i live in northern california and it's my home for life, but i admit southern california is a lot more interesting.

better weather, nice surroundings, etc.

one of the main reasons i'm going to uci is the location.

ok ok, kill me if you want to, but....how can i withdraw from CHP if i am an incoming freshman?

How come you do not want to be in CHP? Over here, honors programs are worth a lot, is it not the same in United States?

The writing test that you have to take just asks that you write a coherent essay which answers the prompt that you are given. It is quite easy compared to the rest of the tests we have had to take. For your situation however, as english being a second language, im sure that there is a class which you would have to take instead and would qualify for, ESL, which would be better suited for you, and take into account that english is your second language.
NorCal has its up and downs, but lively wise SoCal wins. Plus as The Brian said, Irvine has a nice location. It is one of the few campuses that you can walk off, and still feel safe and not have to worry about anything. TV shows such as the OC are false, since it is just a show and their representation of the place. It is all just a hype, if anything the OC is just another county like any other, it just has a TV show after it.
Regarding your question about Institutions, many companies that are global are located in the US. If they are not located in the US, any certificate of graduation from a UC from undergrad or graduate studies is sufficient for them, since they know that a US diploma is worth what is said and just about accepted universally. I may be a bit biased in saying so, but I think that coming to the US, would be a better choice for you, and give you a better learning opportunity and better job opportunities as well in the future.

You can withdraw from CHP anytime that you want. Just speak to the head of CHP. You can also call the registrar's office if you want to speak to someone, and they can direct you on the site as well as who you may have to call or email . Make sure that you think about the reason you are going to drop out, since it is not an easy program to get back into, or get in simply, as well as the fact that it is a lot of prestige to be in CHP.

Fricken MC! You bastard!!! How dare you rival me >:O.

Thank you, Kadya! You are very helpful and I am grateful to your advice. I have decided to stay in Korea and go to Seoul National University, but I will most of likely be studying abroad in United States for one year at University of California in Irvine. I may be traveling to visit United States before I start at University, though, is there any places in California I should visit?
