Kadya's Thread for all UCI Q's

Writing is always filled out throughout the year. The number of sections may diminish, but the courses will always fill up. Writing does not get easier like you explained. The same goes for math courses. I'm not really sure where you came up with this assumption...

Oh, okay thanks for clearing that up for me, I just thought that it might get harder depending on the number of sections offered, but that's not the case as you explained.

Thanks

Hi, I was wondering hows the psychology major there. How competitive is it and how difficult? Thanks.

Is it alright for a bio major to pass/fail writing 39B?

Thinking about applying to med school in the future..

I heard there are number of pass/fails you can use..is this true?

hey kadya, i was wondering if you could give me my chances of getting into uci.

-3.23 uc g.p.a.
-2060 on sat reasoning
-720 on u.s. history subject test and 670 on biology M subject test
-450 hours of extracurricular activities(badminton, tennis, hockey, church youth group, and marching band)
-70 hours of community service

The psychology major here is pretty good. Psychology has a split into two major specializations: cognitive science (psych-cog sci) and social behavior (psych and social behavior - PSB). With this split, a few of my friends have found it more to their tastes. I have UCD friends wishing that they had a distinct split like we do. The competition however is that of any social sci major. It's not that difficult (in an engineer's standpoint).

Do NOT pass/no pass writing 39B. Most medical schools have writing in their pre-reqs which means they want a grade. The number of pass/no pass classes is an average of 1 per quarter. However, you can probably exercise it more. For the sake of graduate school, limit the use of p/np.

Robert, there's not enough information to chance you. However, the high test scores definitely balance out that low GPA.

@jason

can't i just take other writing classes to fulfill this requirement?

like poetry, composition, and fiction writing or whatnot..

where can i see the pre-req classes i need to take for med schools?

From your experience, what do you think is the better dorm/suite to live in? Mesa Court, Middle Earth, or Arroyo Vista? And why?

Not AV, unless the cost of housing is deterring you from being in MC or ME.

MC is better.

Corporate Flea:

The way UCI writing works is you must take Writing 39B. If you get a B or higher, you can enroll in fiction writing and poetry to fulfill your second part of lower-division writing.

Below is a link that will show you the pre-reqs of UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine. It says one year of english is required. It's usually best to take a pre-req with a grade too. However, I'm not positive it's required.

<a href="http://www.medstudent.ucla.edu/prospective/admissions/default.cfm?pgID=3%5B/url%5D">http://www.medstudent.ucla.edu/prospective/admissions/default.cfm?pgID=3</a></p>

are you saying that i can't fulfill my lower div writing req if i take the class with pass/fail option?

You can fulfill your lower div writing req if you take all your writing classes p/np. If you want to take another class in place of Writing 39C, you must take writing 39B for a grade.

hey was wondering what my chances of scoring admission to UCI are if i have the following stats...

3.63 GPA
1890 SAT
610 Math2c
580 Lit
200hrs community service
track and field
cross country

and some other things, but based off of my numbers. do you think I have a good chance?

mrforks00:

Is that GPA weighted? It's a bit low. Other than that, I would say you have an "OK" chance of getting in.

Eh, I hope you applied to something other than engineering...
Don't think you'll get in engineering with those stats. Perhaps you could transfer in to that major, but not initially.

What was your second choice for a major?

do you know if there's an email for uci where i can tell them to make application changes regarding EOP? i called them and they said to go to my admissions status page but i don't see anything with any contact info....

You have to send them a message through that myadmissions website they have setup for you.

can you chance me as well?

major: undeclared-physical sciences
3.65 weighted gpa
1900 SAT
610 US History, 570 Math II ( so so low T_T)
over 200 hours of community service
in the visual arts and design academy at my school
great essays: explained my "poor" background and how i'm a first generation college student, the other essay explained my low gpa (family member death)
senior schedule: advanced profilio development, calculus, ap english, ap gov. honors econ, spanish 2 ( currently straight As, but i can't let them know :(....)
and some clubs in school

I just wanted to know about the criteria for getting an alumni scholarship. Is that open for internationals, or only for US citizens/permanent residents like the Regents? Also, do internationals need to file a FAFSA? I sent the administration a message, but havent heard back yet and its been a week since I sent it

My son is a 1st year mechanical engineering major. He's knows he needs to take Writing 39B and is trying to decide if he should take it in spring or summer. Does anyone know if there is an advantage (easier/harder) as to when he takes it? Any recommendations for other classes to take in the summer? Thanks for your help!
