Kanye West on the cover of TIME magazine

discuss what you think of this. do you think kanye is an influential artist and is bringing a new image to rap? is he TIME man of the year?

I happen to enjoy his music. He is an artist. And I think he does bring a new image to rap. His tracks actually have meaning. He is religious. He has advocated against homophobia. And he doesn;t try to act all "gangsta". He has had negative publicity though. Some think he is arrogant and egotistical because he was mad that he didnt win an AMA. But I think he is just a perfectionist.

I don't know if I'd call him man of the year, but I definitely think he deserves to be on the cover of Time. His music is the best thing happening in hip-hop today, in my opinion, and any arrogance is at least partly justified. That's not to say that I approve of his egotistical behavior, but a few isolated incidents pale in comparison to his contribution to the music scene today.

Kanye West rivals Eminem.... His songs, like Eminem's, have true meaning, which is rare in today's world. You have people like 50 cent and G-Unit killing the rap game with their songs limited to girls and guns.

hes alright but i doubt he will ever have any albums better than his first one but who knows

His new album Late Registration is coming out this week. We'll have to say how it compares to the first.

I think John Legend, Anthony Hamilton, or the Game would be a better choice to be on the cover of the Time. Not to discredit Kanye's musical ability but his music doesn't talk to you like those three and others like them. I admire that he's straying away from rap's superficiality by not talking about "pimps, hustlers, and bic#@*$." But, what do I know, right?

I disagree. His music spoke to me. But we are all entitled to our opinions.

Maybe Kanye isn't the most innovative and "best" choice to put o the cover (although I think he is), but it's a combination of his musical ability and his commercial success that make him the huge force he is in the music industry.

And proton, "Late Registration" just got five stars from Rolling Stone, which is the first case of that I've noticed since the Beastie Boys' last album. Sounds pretty good to me.

You're right, greenday. I just think that there are others out there who's music is more compelling and applies to life in general. Kanye's music seems to focus on music that is in the hip hop cultures, such as gold-diggers and not playing Gospel or positive music on the stations. On the other hand, artists, such as Anthony Hamilton and the Game, just seem more genuine when they talk about life. It's hard to explain. Maybe, it's just my taste in music. I tend to gravitate to mature soul-driven music. But, as you said, everyone has their own opinions.

Edit: Sam you mentioned a huge point, commercial success. I think that's what elevates Kanye's music above those who may be, in my opinion, more inspiring or enlightning. Don't get me wrong, though. I don't hate Kanye's music, but merely think he's slightly overrated. But, it's just my opinion.

here is the cover

Here's a link to a discussion about kanye west a while back, in which you can read my opinion of him, and others' opinion as well.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=78584&highlight=sierra+leone

What are you talking about Botildi? 50 Cent has as much meaning as any of them two in his lyrics, you havent heard Get Rich or Die Tryin? I think you should. ;)

The reason Kanye is getting praise from so many media outlets is because he doesn't rap about guns, drugs, and *****es. His music is seen as positive where as 50 Cent's, G-Unit's, The Game's, etc. is seen as negative.

Yeah I guess it's alright. I still don't know why he's on the cover of TIME though.

kanye west sucks. snacky chan is the best

50 cent, are you kidding. He raps about how cool his life is with his hoes, gangster friends, etc. when its all bs. He is basically lyign about his life and only thing that he did that was close to being a gangster is being shot. He was probably shot because he was trying to be gangster or something. G-Unit is awful. They are not as hardcore as they think they are. Their rap is just pitiful. The Game is same as 50 cent. These people who probabaly had one little experience with gangs think that small experience is good enough to show off. 50 cent's book is a joke. He talks about being shot. Isn't being shot one of the most painful and scariest moment of your life. He's bragging how cool he is and how he is the lader of gangs. Please, if he's did that, he wouldnt be a sellout.

anyways. Kanye West = good. One of the best of all time for sure.

50 Cent is no artist. Kanye West is. Shame on Eminem for mentoring 50 Cent and supporting his *ty music. Also, 50 sucks live and 75% percent of his music lacks depth. Candy Shop? Outta Control? Would you say that's coming from a real artist? Hell, no. He has a couple of "fun" songs, not an album worth buying. Kanye raps about real issues and actually seems somewhat...I don't know, intelligent? He knows how to express himself while the other guys just talk * all the time. I can feel my brain cells dying if I listen to it for too long.

W/e, I don't like rap anyway.

Late Registration is better than College Dropout. It's one of those albums that gets better every time you listen to it. I love his beats.
