Kaplan Scholars Program?

<a href="http://www.kaplanfreshman.northwestern.edu/%5B/url%5D">http://www.kaplanfreshman.northwestern.edu/</a></p>

Did anyone else get the email concerning it? It seems like an amazing program, but I'm wondering how they could possibly whittle down the applicants to 48 spots? Any insight on how they'll pick the lucky ones?

^^got the same email...i have the same questions.

I got an email about it... what does this mean (I wanna do cognitive science/biology, not humanities... though my grades in humanities in HS were much better than my math/science grades)? How many people get this? Why did I get an email about it? Do all WCAS students get an email about this program?

illinis_kid,

They is a brand-new program and they are simply trying to get the words out. They might have sent it to everyone or anyone with solid academic record in humanities (but that may apply to most NU admits anyway). You can major in science and still do this provided that you don't plan to take a math, a science, and a language class at the same time (cos that would be 5 classes which exceeds the recommended load). I think NU wants to provide a more rewarding first-year liberal arts curriculum to those who desire it.

If you're not that interested, please don't apply- less competition for me :P

Students who complete the program will have richly earned their designation as Kaplan Humanities Scholars.

That should provide some incentive. ;)

Yeah I got this too. It sounds interesting, but I'm not sure if it would work with MMSS. This is Fall and Winter quarter and counts as a freshman seminar, but in MMSS you have your freshman seminars Winter and Spring. Plus, I doubt it would be a good idea to tie up my first two quarters with just MMSS and Kaplan.

I got the email and am interested...
but what are the other seminar options?

the way i understand it, its just 2 course each quarter, so you still have two more to chooose for each. and also, you have to take some seminar anyway, so this clears that, plus some other requirements. so it makes me think it wont hurt doing it since it seems cool and covers required things anyway.

also, the email said it went to only cas and comm students.

Andrew, I'm not sure if your talking to me, but I'll respond as if you are. If I am mistaken, ignore this post.

Kaplan counts as 2 courses Fall and Winter quarter and fulfills the freshman seminar requirements. MMSS is also 2 courses (1 math, 1 social science). So MMSS + Kaplan would take up all of my classes Fall and Winter quarter. Also, MMSS students have their freshman seminars winter and spring, so I'm not sure how that would work with Kaplan.

Necromancy, ahoy! Anyone else get in? I'm pretty psyched for it!

how did you find out you got in? i can't find it anywhere

<a href="http://www.wcas.northwestern.edu/freshmen/secondseminar.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.wcas.northwestern.edu/freshmen/secondseminar.html</a></p>

bumping this up from last year...anyone else get this email, or know anything about the program?

I know a ton about the program (I just completed it). What do you want to know?

haha for starters, what did you think of it? how does it compare to other frosh seminars?

Well I didn't take other forsh seminars, so this'll be a bit of my opinion mixed in, but...

DEFINITELY worth taking, while it was certainly challenging intellectually, thats part of what made it so rewarding. Very rigorous/ demanding schedule for two quarters helped with the adjustment to school (easy schedule now is definitely fun). Some of my best friends are from the program also, since taking half your classes with the same set of 48 students for 2 quarters in a row really makes you feel like a cohesive, special group within the university (and you're treated that way by the university too- special catered events just for you, where you eat with the Dean, special movie parties with pizza, etc.). The professors for the course that's being repeated are among the best at the university and TRULY remarkable both in their credentials/ knowledge and also their teaching and approachability.

I have never once regretted being a scholar.

This sounds really interesting. Is this only limited to students within Weinberg, what if you're double majoring in weinberg and medill? How does the selection process work? And finally....what were some interesting assignments you had?
Thanks!

Limited to people who're in Weinberg and subject to the Freshman seminar requirement, and to students in the school of comm only. Selection is done by the program directors and they use your full college application. And the most interesting assignment? Honestly it was mostly regular papers, along with a weekly blog assignment where we just reflected/ free wrote mostly. The class was very multimedia and used tons of new, custom developed IT for the class.

a few Q's:
is the workload noticeably different (either in sheer amount or different types of work) than the usual freshman seminar?
i know they said they specifically choose times with the fewest conflicts possible, but did you/any of your classmates have scheduling issues for classes or other activities?
is it really weinberg-dominated or balanced between comm/weinberg kids? (i'll be a theatre major in comm.)
