Does it really matter which college you go to for accounting? I mean it is not like you are learning how to perform open heart surgery and need to attend the best school to learn the best techniques.

I was planning on attending Rutgers but started to ponder about cheaper colleges such as Kean University. Can anyone enlighten me on the pros and cons of attending a lesser known and cheaper college like Kean?

Do you also think the coursework and expectations would be more easier at Kean? I really am fed up with professors assigning so much work when all you really need to do to learn the material is read the book and do the problems in it.

Rutgers is known for their accounting program and please take it from an accountant. If the choice is mine, I would pick Rutgers any day. You will encounter good professors and bad no matter what institution you attend so you really can’t pick schools this way. Accounting is not an easy major specially if you are aiming to get your CPA. You will need a school that drills the understanding of accounting to be able to pass that difficult CPA test. Going to a school that has a good reputation in accounting will sure make taking the test a little easier. Good luck with your decision!!

I’m going to Rutgers and I plan to major in accounting. I guess my post is kind of useless since I’m only in pre-business as of now, but Rutgers does have an excellent reputation for both their accounting and finance programs.

There are also a lot of academic based fraternities (one actually for just accountants or finance majors) so if put yourself out there and do good in school, the opportunities are clearly there for the taking. Remember to not only do well in school, but to meet new people, “network”, and apply for internships to build your resume.

You could always go to cc for 2 years, do really well, and then transfer into RBS. I think they said to aim for at least a 3.5 if you want to transfer in from another college.

I went to Kean for the past two years before transferring into Rutgers this fall.

Don’t go to Kean. Seriously. Don’t. Don’t even consider it.

Kean University is a god-awful, dysfunctional university, inhabited by students that shouldn’t have even graduated from high school, much less be in a four year school. Honestly, you’re way better off attending community college.

Rutgers, on the other hand, is a top public school, which believe it or not, over 246 years after it’s founding, is still on the rise.

Kean almost lost their accreditation in the past year. Don’t even thing about it. If you need to save money, start at cc for general ed stuff, then transfer to Rutgers.

Large corporation & big accounting firms recruit at Rutgers, so you will be a step ahead of all other NJ 4yr schools. (Seton Hall has a good biz school, but the price is about the same as Rutgers).
