Keeping Merit Aid

How hard is it to maintain a 3.0 as an engineering major at NEU? My merit award says I need to maintain a 3.0 while taking 16 credit hours/semester. That seems kind of harsh.

16 credits is a normal load. If you have below 3.0 not only would you lose your scholarship but you will not get coop or career interviews with many engineering employers as they specify a 3.0 minimum GPA.

A 3.0 is pretty reasonable and as mentioned 16 hours/semester is the normal load needed to graduate on time, so it’s not any sort of accelerated pace. You also have leeway - a semester where it falls below means you have a semester to pull it back up before anything happens. It’s not a given but it shouldn’t be a major concern if you pay attention to your classes even 75%.

Do you maybe have some AP or dual credits you could not transfer so you can take those classes over to get a couple easy As, if you’re that nervous?

Any credits transferred in or AP credits do not count in GPA calculation.

I know. I’m suggesting they retake the class instead of getting credit for the AP or dual credit classes so it’ll be an easy class for them.

Retaking classes so they will be easy is horrible advice. Especially on the tight engineering track - where you need to keep up with prerequisites to stay on course to graduate in time. No reason why you can’t maintain a 3.0 with a major in engineering at NEU. There will have some very busy semesters (many with 18 or more credits when you include labs and required 1 credit stuff) - so don’t think 16 will be the limit.

@kiddie I actually agree with you completely.

Totally agree with this!

Beware the ‘easy A.’ In my daughter’s Calc 1 class, more than half the class had already taken Calc in high school but were retaking it. There were no easy A’s. In fact, some of the kids retaking it didn’t do very well at all because they assumed they knew the material and didn’t study. Hello C!
