I got accepted by IU and I am planning to transfer to kelley after my freshmen year. Can anyone give me some tips on what to do in my freshmen year in order to transfer? Thanks!
First read and commit to memory the requirements here:
http://bulletins.iu.edu/iub/kelley-ugrad/2012-2013/admission/standard.shtml
Then, search this forum for Standard Admit advice… lots of it.
My personal advice follows:
Since you have to take a total of 4 Kelley admissions courses on campus at IU, study the descriptions and be sure you can get at least a B in each one. In addition to the descriptions, check out each course on the IU Grade Distribution database to see how tough each one is on average and to find out which instructors to avoid. (Do this for every course at IU).
Calc and Finite Math trip people up, so avoid one or more of these at IUB and take online or at Community College (even before coming to IU) The credits taken elsewhere won’t count for Kelley admission, but will satisfy Kelley/IU requirements later. I was a Direct Admit and still took weed out courses like Finite and Econ at Community College to avoid hammering my GPA with needlessly hard classes at IU. Since you are a Standard Admit you’ll have to take one of these at IU, so just be ready.
Craft your combination of 4 Kelley classes carefully. Play to your strengths when picking from each category.
BTW, Keep in mind that to take A-201 (Fin Acct) or any other Kelley accounting, you’ll have to first take the dreaded A-100 8-week dreamcrusher. If you didn’t take accounting in High School, get a book, go online, or take an introductory course over the summer to prepare you for this. It’s not that it’s so hard, it’s just that it hits a whole bunch of accounting concepts all at once which normally you would pick up in multiple classes. They also have tricky questions on the tests that are pretty nasty if you’re just getting used to accounting terms. Take it the second half of first semester to avoid getting slammed your first few weeks at IU.
Be VERY careful believing the advisor recommendations. The placement test you take for summer orientation usually places people too high in math and languages. There’s no shame in snagging an easy A when trying to get into Kelley.
For you, Freshman year will be all about focus on your required Kelley courses and getting B’s or higher. Given that you’re thinking about this now and asking here, you should be fine. I met people at orientation that had no idea what they were even signing up for until that day. You’re already ahead of them! Good Luck
