Kelley Direct Admit chances

Thinking of writing about getting into the IB Workshop, so hopefully that shows good drive?

First of all, you will probably get in either way with your 32.

But isn’t the prompt about what you did in high school to work towards your career goals? Just my opinion, but I think writing about how your going to get into the IB workshop shows naivete more than anything else. I would stick to what you have actually done. If you are unsure about your career goals, then I would frame it more as life goals and write a good essay about that.

Well I didnt really know what i wanted to do in High School, so i only have an accounting class to show for the love of business and that i have been learning on my own, i had my life goal as investment banking and said that Kelley would be my best chance to get into the industry

Ok, the problem I see is that you can’t write about getting into the investment banking workshop when the prompt is what you did in high school to work towards your career goals. Personally, I think it is stupid that they ask you to write about your career goals then when you get on campus they will tell you that you actually don’t know anything about these careers, but they do.

You say you have an interest in investment banking. That interest must have come from somewhere, and you have probably done something to learn more about it. Write about that.

I wrote about reading Warren Buffet’s Snowball book in 9th grade and then deciding that I need to pursue learning about business on my own outside of the classroom. I then wrote about specific instances where I learned about motivating people that I learned from leadership experiences. Then I wrote about honing my negotiation skills scalping tickets at professional sporting events.

My point the things you have done don’t need to be official. Think about the experiences you have had outside of the classroom, then try to connect it to a skill that most careers require.

For IU students, getting accepted into IBW may be more difficult than getting into a medical school. You can search for threads similar to the one below. Don’t be disappointed if the IBW path does not pan out. Nonetheless, as a Kelley student with good GPA, you will have other opportunities.

Not to mention the fact that whether you get into the workshop is almost entirely determined by whether the 3-4 seniors you get paired with on your “Superday” happen to like you or not.

Alright, and as far as potentially not going into the IBW, i’ve heard the IB Seminar is also very helpful when networking, And thanks hkem, i wasn’t sure if they were referring to things in class or school, but good to know that experiences can be used

Sorry, I dont think you will. I believe you need over a 3.75 GPA and ACT 29 or better. Your score is good but GPA will let you down :(

I came to IU with the goal of getting into the Investment Banking Workshop and it completely worked out. I was fortunate enough to be admitted, worked as hard as I could and took full advatange of all the opportunities it had to offer while searching for a job, and ultimately recieved an offer at my #1 firm choice. This is not the case with everyone, but if you work hard at it it is completely attainable.

The Workshop is difficult to get into, but admissions is not “determined by whether or not 3-4 seniors like you.” It is determined by the classes you have taken, GPA, resume/clubs/work experience, networking with current members of the Workshop, and interview abilities (all things that potiential employers look at). All of these factors play a role, but it is ultimately up to the Professor to decide who is admitted and who is not.

The Seminar is another great option. It has good placement results and each year there are a couple students who get as good or better jobs than those in the Workshop. It is getting a little more competitve to get into though; last year it became invitation only where you had to have a 3.5+ GPA and apply to get in.

As for getting into Kelley, you can always petition. It might not work, but you have nothing to lose by trying. Even if you are not directly admitted, there are hundreds of freshman admitted every year.
