Kelley School Direct Admit Question

Does any one know the reasons why the direct admit decision may be delayed even though the criteria posted on the website is met? I am consistently seeing that the response on the direct admission is coming within two weeks after getting admitted IU. My S has been admitted on 12/30 and he has 3.8 GPA (UW out of 4.0) and 1290 SAT (CR + Math), which seemed to be in the range for the direct admission. I called them and was told that they can’t give an answer on phone and we need to wait till six weeks after IU admission. Any ideas on how to approach them again are greatly appreciated.

They recalculate GPA’s based on their own scale. My daughter did get admitted with a 3.86 UW GPA and a 32 ACT, but I was told on the phone her GPA according to Indiana’s scale was a 3.7. At my d’s school, an A minus is a 4.0, but at Indiana, I think an A- is a 3.7. Also, I think they only look at certain classes for the GPA ( core courses) If your son calls, they may talk to him, they don’t love talking to parents. He can ask what his GPA is on their scale. Also, they said she should get the letter in 6 weeks and she got an email about a week later. I hope this helps. Please let us know what you find out.

Thanks for the reply. Do you have any URL on how the GPA is calculated for Indiana U? I tried looking. I will encourage my son to call the school.

No, sorry. I just tried looking it up and couldn’t find it either. This is the URL that IU uses for grades http://www.iue.edu/registrar/policies/grading_policy.php My guess is the conversion chart is the same, but I still don’t know what classes they use. I wish I could have been more help. Please post any information you find out. When I was searching, I found a notice stating that petition for 2015 Kelley school is closed. I know he can still take the SAT/ACT until May or something and get direct admit if he has the stats. Good luck!

@spenmk Waiting is hard but I think the longer response time is a result of when your son applied and the holidays. Fewer students apply Sept - Nov so the turnaround time is faster. Since your son’s GPA and SAT scores meet the Kelley criteria he should be accepted. FWIW - Kelley converts 5.0 scaled GPAs to 4.0 GPAs but I really don’t think they recalcuate the A-, B+ to the 3.7 and 3.3…that would require a lot of effort. Yes, once enrolled - IU students’ GPAs are calculated that way but highly unlikely as part of admissions.

Per Kelley’s site, they state a 6 - 8 week window after IU acceptance for Kelley notification. Your son was admitted 12/30 so only 4 weeks have gone by. Unfortunately, you will have to wait it out. But, I really do think your son is in.

From the Kelley website
3.Once you have been admitted to Indiana University, and you qualify for direct admission, you will receive notification of your direct admission within six to eight weeks. If it has been longer than eight weeks since your admission to IU and you have not received an email or letter about direct admission, you may email us.

@WistfullThinking‌ thanks. We will certainly wait for the 6 to 8 week period. We also signed up for a day-long Kelley visit in April. So, I am assuming we will have opportunities to talk to the direct admit program office at some point and resolve this.

@spenmk, is this the url you are looking for? http://registrar.indiana.edu/grades/grade-values/grading-system.shtml

@BCVIOLINMOM‌ thanks. I was looking for the info on how IUB converts high school grades to a 4.0 system. The URL looks like how it converts letter grades to GAP for its classes.

Did your son call? They are very nice. They may not tell him if he got in but they will tell him what his GPA is on their scale. I know Wistful Thinking said it’s a lot of effort to recalculate but they did with my daughter. She went from a 3.86 to a 3.78 on their scale. Also, your son could ask his college counselor at school, they would know. You’ll probably find out very soon but it sounds like it’s on your mind…I can totally relate. Why make yourself crazy?

@oliver17‌ Thanks for checking. He just got an email this morning that he got the direct admission. I was certainly relieved as he is very excited and it is his top choice school.

@spenm Congrats to your son! Glad the waiting is over for you and him!

Congratulations! I’m sure it’s a relief. It can be as unnerving for the parents as the students.

Congratulations!!! My DS is a freshman at IU this year and loves it, although he is not in Kelley.

my son petitioned because his GPA is on 100 scale. Who at IUB can he call to find out the conversion? Number? Department? Thanks

@nstraub‌ There likely is no conversion. If he meets the ACT/SAT cutoff, he will be treated as any other petition candidate. This is from my experience applying from a HS that doesn’t calculate a cumulative GPA.

He does meet the SAT cutoff - 1300 on the 2 parts. Thanks for your reply. Do you know when he will hear back on his petition?

My son received an email after he submitted his petition that the petition would be reviewed with a notification to his IU email account by Feb. 16. I don’t think he’s heard anything yet. Good luck!

decisions are out – my son got an email last night that his petition was not granted. good luck

my son too was denied direct admission - received email 2/13 at 5:06pm in NY

my son was just granted direct admission April 5th. IU admissions had his GPA incorrect in the system. His grades are on a 100 point scale. Not sure what exactly went on - the administrator in the high school guidance office contacted the look rep and had it amended. In any case, we were just at a red carpet day and were told that you could get your grades up and still be directly admitted. The deadline is the end of July. You could also take the SAT again if you need that score higher too.
